I am trying to clone (not image) my pre-installed OEM Win 8 OS to a partition on another (external) hard drive using Paragon 12. The problem: my Win 8 OS is on dynamic disk and paragon does not work with Dynamic disk. How do I solve this problem? Thanks!

Perhaps the free paragon doesn't do that.

If that is the case, you will a version of paragon that does work with dynamic disks.

I think those more esoteric functions are in the paid versions.

What paragon are you using?

Maybe the trial version Home will do it.

Or you could try the aomei free version.

I have the Server edition - so not sure you can do it with the freebie, but it worth a look, just atiny 3mb download, and it is a great program.

You could be right. I am only using a 30-day trial version of Paragon Backup & Recovery 12. I probably need to get the full version. But the message didn't mention about getting a full version to make it work. It only said it does not support dynamic disks.

I tired the AOMEI free version and there was a message saying I need to get the PRO (paid) version to work on dynamic disks. Oh well...

Yes, it is a bit unusual - the sort of function most will put in paid versions.

I expect you will have to image and restore, then.

Eventually I may have to do it that way. But I will just keep this thread open for now in case someone also have a good suggestion. Thanks man! I wish I could rep you. :thumb:

Hi there
Seems most of the FREE products don't support Dynamic Disks -- however I'm not sure why the Windows OS itself should be on a Dynamic disk --I'd have it in a simple partition then it should work OK.

Another get around might be to do it in a sort of "Cack handed" way.

1) BACK UP the image to some data area on a disk (can be external).
2) RESTORE it from the backup to where you want to restore it to.

This should essentially be the same as the "Cloning" process but is a two step procedure rather than the single step cloning.

I assume the OS is in its own partition. Don't forget to include the system reserved partition as well to the backup image.

I'd still think about buying a decent PAID version of backup software - the amount of time and hassle you save make purchasing this type of software quite reasonable. I use Acronis True Image 2013 now -- it's fine -- I had problems with the 2011 and 2012 versions but they seemed to have it fixed and it handles UEFI / Secured boot systems too.

Cheers
jimbo

Thanks for your input Jimbo.
Actually, I was also surprised to find out that my Win 8 came pre-installed in Dynamic Disk.
Can you point me to the tutorial how to restore to an external hd? Thanks a lot.

Hi there,

Sorry I cannot post a screenshot of the disk mgt right now becasue I am in the office. I'll do it later when I get home. But to answer you first question, it's an Acer AX3470-EB358 (DT.SLHAA.001) Desktop, Win 8 64-bit. It's a small build (about 1/3 the size of a regular PC, shorter than a PS3) and I use it as an HTPC.

Yes, it is a bit unusual - the sort of function most will put in paid versions.

I expect you will have to image and restore, then.

One of the paid for versions of Paragon 12 , should be able convert the dynamic partition, back to primary.

I used AOMEI Partition Assistant Pro. to change my HD from Dynamic to Basic. It worked great. I tried other programs, but this was the only one that worked. It will change it without losing any data. It's well worth the $36. I had a 40 meg. system partition that I could not get rid of until I got this program. I don't know why my HD came with a Dynamic disk. Nero Backitup would not even recognize it.
