    Do both installations work?

Do you get a choice of which Windows 8 to startup in? If so, the one listed at the top is the last one you installed.

In this last installation, which drive letter did you select to install it to?

Please go ahead and post a screenshot showing the full layout of your Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) window.

it showed me both but it didn't give me time to choose it just loaded the new installation on it's own. and i installed on drive c which is the only one it let me install to which has the old installation on it as well. can i use disk cleanup to get rid of it?

From the looks of your Disk Management, you only have one Windows 8 installation which is the last one. The second "Windows 8" boot manager entry is just the failed one that is still listed for whatever reason.

While you are in the working Windows 8, you could use OPTION ONE in the tutorial below to remove the bad (not "Current OS; default OS" one) to no longer have it listed at boot.
