K so I'm working on a sony sve14 laptop, I had dualboot windows 8 / ubuntu, I tried to refresh the pc and somehow it deleted both my windows and ubuntu partition.. Both the recovery partitions are still there but how can i access them to reinstall? I have another PC with windoze 8, can i make a recovery disk off that HP laptop and use it to restore windows then access the recovery partition that way? or what do i do?

It's doable, but I would need to see it to work out exactly how.

It is probably easiest for you to get a win 8 iso and install it.

Your oem machine should install the correct edition and have the key embedded in the bios.

You can search for a download - pretty easy, or you can try and get one from the oem . I expect they will send it to you for a fee.

Pretty sure your HP discs won't work for what you are trying to do if you use the standard HP setup.

Again, it is possible , but you would need to apply the image which is a bit fiddly if you haven't done it before.

k so i'll boot into ubuntu here in a minute and take a snapshot of the partitions to ensure that i have what i need.. i'm more of a linux and windows 7 guy.. I love windows eight but i hate this new rubbish with product keys embedded in bios etc.. i think they should still allow the product key to be labeled on the device like with windows 7.. this would not affect the new way of keeping track of things whatsoever.. they just want a way to make more money in cases like this..

i'm guessing this would be my best bet eh?

btw do you have gtalk? or a faster way of chatting? maybe if you wouldn't mind helpin me out to the slightest degree we could talk.. I would greatly appreciate it

also if i go this route and it fails will it erase any partitions / info in bios?

I have only just started looking at Linux. I am very impressed with it so far.

You are obviously not a beginner. You can get an 8 download using the setup thing and your existing prod key - But it will only d/l the same bit version as you are running it on - and it contains a compressed .esd instead of a .wim. You would be much better with a proper iso that contains install.wim . You can service it, for future use - include updates, tweaks, etc. That can't be done with the esd d/l from MS.

Partition screenshot would be useful, better to see the contents of the recovery partition. If there is a large.wim, possibly called install.wim ( or perhaps several small .swm files ), then you should be able to apply the image .

You will need something bootable with a way of applying a .wim image.

I am sure I have something for that.

I don't see how you can damage the bios/efi firmware. If you restore the factory image from oem setup - it may well restore to exact factory settings and delete your Linux partitions.

I was able to recover my ext4 partition with partition wizard. Then I just needed to reinit grub2.

k so just looked through "Windows Recovery Tools" partition and "SONYSYS" partitions and both lack the .swm or .wim files.. they're mainly bootimg.efi files for multiple languages.. This is lookin like an epic fail as of right now

There might be a load of .sny and .mod files.

I have done it with those before but it there is lot of faffing around.

You can have a look on your HP discs , see if there is anything resembling .wim or.swm.

If there is, you can likely use those. The trick is not to use the HP setup.exe or boot.wim, but to apply the image direct from the install.wim using gimagex, or similar.

I see the sources directory in the screenie.

The wim file (s) should be in windows re tools\sources.

Install.wim is roughly equivalent to casper/squashfs

There will be a lot of files in there.

You should find boot.wim and install.wim amongst them.

That's awkward.

I think they must be using a proprietary filetype.

Sony might be using .sny.

If there are several, it is possible to stitch them together after changing the headers, but it is a hassle.

Another possibility is to change the bcd entry and get the thing to boot straight into the recov partition., with luck the factory recov will start up.

Complicated on an efi system.

It just crossed my mind - you may be able to install grub2 again and see if it adds the win re tools partition to the grub boot menu.

If it does, you can then try and boot into that.

Have you got bootrepair and grub customizer on your linux boot media ? ( I am assuming that is ubuntu 12.10 x64 live cd )

If it's not there, you can install into your live session

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair && sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair
