Can I have a 3tb data on windows 8 32bit?

Hello,

According to this thread I can only use GPT only for data. Could anyone please clarify if in my system (Windows 8 32 bits) I can have the boot partition with a 1TB MBR disk and in the same machine install another 3TB GPT disk for data? (i need GPT so that I can use the whole disk, otherwise I only can have 2.2 TB)

Thank you very much,
Marco

Hello Marco, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you mean to keep your Windows 8 on the 1 TB MBR disk, then install a separate 3TB GPT disk for data, then yes you will be able to do that if you like.

You'll just connect the 3TB drive as usual, then convert it to GPT.

Yes, that is what I meant Brink. thank you very much for your quick answer. Just one more question: I have installed windows 8 32bits in my PC. Can I use this operating system and convert MBR to GPT so that I can use my whole 3TB hard disk (I thought I needed 64bits OS and that is why the post came out in the first place) and yes, my mainboard supports UEFI

Thanks

Yes, you will be able to convert the 3TB drive to GPT from within Windows 8 just like in the tutorial below. It doesn't matter if Windows 8 is 32-bit or 64-bit to do this and have the full 3TB.

I am following the tutorial, but I have 2 issues:
1. Cannot delete the partitions because the hard disk has already installed windows 8
2. The option to convert to GPT is disabled when right clicking on the name of the disk. Right clicking on every partition does not have the option. You can check the captured page here

Could you please help what I can do?

Thank you very much

What happened to your 1TB MBR drive that had Windows 8 installed on it?

I thought you were going to convert the 3TB drive from within that Windows 8 instead, than use the 3TB HDD as only a data drive.

Well, at the beginning of the thread, that was my idea... but in the second question I wanted to mean if I can use only my 3 tb hard disk, make it GPT and boot from it (with windows 8 32 bits). Can I do that, or I will definitely have to buy the 1 TB hard disk?

Thanks

If you mean to run 32Bit Windows FROM the 3TB GPT disk then the answer is NO the disk needs to be MBR then. You need to install Windows 32Bit on another disk (1TB or anything under and up to 2TB is good) that has to be converted to MBR. The 3TB disk can then be used as a data disk and still formatted in GPT if the 32bit Windows is not on this disk..

But if you don't add another disk then you can split the 3TB disk in 3x 1GB MBR partitions or 2 x1.5GB ones and still use it and installing WIndows on one of those partitions. The one big 3TB partition is not mandatory.

MBR allows up to 4 primary partitions on the same disk so keep an eye on how many partitions you need.
GPT allows up to 128 primary partitions on the same disk.

Currently the hard disk has two MBR partitions of 100 MB and 195.21 GB (with the system). 1 with 1852.69 GB unallocated and 1 with 746.52 GB which is unreachable. You say I can use the whole 3tb with this configuration? Could you please let me know how, because the last partition is not reachable...

You can't do it like that.

You will need to convert to GPT.
