Setup program unreadable when using a Geforce 8400 card

When I run the Windows 8 setup program the screens are nearly unreadable. There is a screenshot of this below. I'm not even sure how to describe the garbled text effect for googleing purposes.


While I was able to finally get Windows installed with a lot of guessing at what was on the screen, the video problem persists. I suspect this is some sort of driver issue, but I am not able to download and install the latest drivers from Nvidia because the screen is so unreadable.

I tried booting up in Windows restricted graphics mode (I think that was F5 in the special boot menu), but the problem persists. Same goes for booting up in Safe Mode.

I know this computer is OK, because I was able to install Window 8 on it just fine when using the integrated graphics. Also I am currently dual booting Windows XP (using the Geforce card), and it it does not have the same problem.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Sounds like the 8400 is defective. Can you try it in another computer or try a different card in this one.

I doubt it's the card, because it would be having problems when I boot into other OSes. This is currently being used on a triple boot computer, where it does just fine running Windows XP with the latest Nvidia drivers, and Opensuse Linux with the open source Nouveau drivers. It's only on Windows 8 where there is a problem.

Try using the VGA port & a VGA Monitor.

Double-Checked the Refresh-Rate in your settings ?
