Welcome stu01. See Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant - Download and Run. Be sure and read through the tutorial before you start. Take the route where you download an ISO. You can burn the ISO to a DVD to use it in installing. You need to do use the upgrade assistant from the computer on which you intend to install Win8. Win8 won't come via email.

Yes, you should be able to download the installation files.

You will usually be offered the option to create an iso from those.

You can then burn that to dvd as an image.

Not sure why you would need to order the dvd as well - unless you want the pretty box ( I don't think you even get that tbh ).

It is possible the upgrade assistant no longer offers to create an iso.

If not, you can easily do it yourself from the installation files.

Your are very welcome. I should have mentioned--that no DVD will arrive unless you order during the process of doing the ISO download, etc. Actually, if you order, then you will get what amounts to the retail upgrade DVD set. The set contains two DVD's--one for 64-bit Win8, and one for 32-bit Win8. You can install only one at a time. And, the same product key works on both. You don't have to order the set since you can create a DVD from your ISO. But, in this case, you will be limited to installing consistently with the bitness of the computer you use in downloading the ISO. So, as mentioned, it is important that you use the computer you intend to install on in doing the download (or alternatively a machine having the same bitness as the one you intend to install on).

Did you order those via the upgrade assistant thing ?

If so, it might be worth paying the extra few bucks to get them.

Might as well wait for the SP1 /Blue thing.

Yes, I actually ordered two sets (did two upgrades). Was doing the $39.99 upgrade deals, and the discs sets were $12.99 as I recall in each deal.
