Hi, I just bought an Asus UX32VD with Windows 8 (64 bit)

I bought a new SSD to install, but am having trouble figuring out how to get windows onto it. I tried creating the recovery disk on USB but that didn't work.

I've read through a bunch of these forums, lots of info out there but I'm confused what I need to do.

How can I copy windows, swap drives, then put windows on the new SSD? Can I use USB? I do not have a dvd drive.

Is there a step by step instruction somewhere?

Also note, the new SSD is smaller than the OEM supplied HDD.

How to Migrate OS to New Hard Disk of the Same or Different Size

Apparently works for SSD’s also.

Uses Paragon Hard Disk Manager 12

Worked for theog on "500gb HDD moving a 250gb" HDD/UEFI/GPT/Secure Boot.

Worked for Epoch on a Lenovo Z580 with Windows 8 preinstalled (UEFI/GPT/Secure Boot)--migration of 500 GB HDD (I think) to 256 GB SSD. Read through post #68 in Moving pre-installed Windows 8 from HDD to SSD.

Worked for diesele on an Asus N76 with Windows 8 preinstalled (UEFI/GPT/Secure Boot)—probably migration of OCZ Agility 3 SSD to a Samsung 840 Pro SSD (see post #85 on the thread linked below). Read through post #73 in Moving pre-installed Windows 8 from HDD to SSD.

Worked for jgregori37. See post #79 in Moving pre-installed Windows 8 from HDD to SSD.

thanks for the help, I tried paragon, it gets past the first stage, then comes up with an I/O error for disk 2......

not sure why, its a brand new Intel SSD

also the new SSD is in an external harddrive case for now, it does not show up in my computer, but shows up as a device. I cannot access it like a normal storage device. Is this normal?

You are very welcome. WRT to the two issues you mention, I have never put an SSD in a USB enclosure. But, still, I think that something is not right. From what I have read, an SSD in a proper USB enclosure should behave like a USB. Here is an example (not that the enclosure is highly regarded). You might find something of interest here.

There is a yellow exclamation mark on my computer:

USB-IF xHCI USB Host Controller

says this device driver could not be loaded, and in trying to update it says it is up to date.

would it be better to swap the drives, then will it boot the original HDD in the USB enclosure? not sure if I can run windows on a usb device or not?

I doubt it is going to boot from the enclosure if you swap the drive (not 100% sure though). I think booting as you are suggesting generally is a more involved process. Before you fiddle around too much be sure you are well backed up. Do you have good reason to think that the enclosure you are using should work for your SSD?

ok thanks! its still a new computer, I haven't loaded anything on it so it just has windows 8 and whatever it came with.

The salesman thought it would work, but I don't know for sure. its just a usb 3.0 enclosure, sata I, ii, iii.

What would you recommend for connecting the SSD in order for me to save the paragon image onto the SSD?

Try updating the drivers.

thanks, just tried, it says its for windows 7.....tried anyway but it won't run the setup, says my computer does not meet requirements.....i'm guessing they mean I don't have windows 7

I don't have a drive enclosure recommendation for an SSD as I have never used one, shopped for one, or researched them. Sorry.

Ok thanks.

What if I make an image of the windows drive (c:), it came with that and a d: which is empty.

If I can save an image of c: onto the d: of the laptop, then swap in the ssd.

Then use the recovery disk where I am asked to load an image.......then hopefully the USB enclosure will work with the hdd and load the image?

Confused. Your laptop came with two drives (or do you mean partitions?) with one empty? Regardless, not sure why you think what you are saying would work better on the SSD than what you already have tried. I have never used the Asus UX32VD recovery disc so I am not sure what would happen (different size drive partition or whatever). I can't recommend that you try your suggested approach. As mentioned before, be sure you are well backed up before becoming too adventuresome. What does your Disk Management show for partitions?

Thanks everyone for all the help and suggestions! It worked! The original plan worked using Paragon to migrate to the new SSD.

The issue I had was connecting the SSD to save the image there. Turns out the USB enclosure I used did not have enough power. I tried a self powered USB enclosure for the SSD and all is good.
