what is windows.old folder in c drive?

hi friends ,,,,my pc was running slow so I refreshed the pc by using settings and general tab option. it asked to insert the disc and I inserted too and it performed few repairs and the pc was re started, then I found that all installed applications were gone . so how to get back my older state? is it possible or should I install all again.

and one more thing when I opened c drive then I found a folder named windows.old and when I explored that folder which was the copy of c drive before the repaired was done. so what to do with that folder? may I remove that cause it has occupied a large amount of space . or does it affects when I delete it. what is its use if I had to keep that. and some other files named bdrlog are seen so can I delete them, so help me with suggestion .; I have attached the pic too
    thanks

    Hello quickslvr,

The Windows.old folder contains a copy of the previous Windows installation. It can safely be deleted if you do not want to copy anything back from within it.

    1) To keep App's.
Refresh Windows 8 - Create and Use Custom Recovery Image

    2) When doing a Refresh, Refresh will delete App's
    Refresh Windows 8

    3) Windows.old is your old install files.
