    Windows 8 Upgrade problems

So, I am trying to upgrade from windows 7 to 8 and everytime i begin the download it starts to go and makes it past the preparing which i see a lot of people having problems with. then it gets to the installation part and freezes at 11%. i left it to install last night as i went to bed woke up the next morning and it was still at 11% so, i decided to restart it maybe somthing was wrong, still nothing. Then i said to myself maybe if i start the disc from the startup screen it will work. Nope. When i did that it told me the installation process had already been started and i needed to remove the disc start up my computer normally and continue from there the way i was before. So, if anyone has an ideas on how i should troubleshoot this that would be greatly appreciated.

Are you trying to install wirelessly? If yes, then I'd try using Ethernet.

    Welcome to EightForums.

Have you tried a clean install.
You will need to reinstall all your programs in Windows 8.

Upgrade to Windows 8 with only a product key - Microsoft Windows

(Windows 8 Setup checks that your PC meets all system requirements before it installs Windows 8.)

Have your product key handy. You can find it in your online order information, in the confirmation email for your purchase, or on the packaging. The product key will look something like this:
    XXXXX- XXXXX- XXXXX- XXXXX- XXXXX

Make a backup of everything you want to keep. Save it somewhere you can get to it later, like an external drive or a DVD.

Always better to do a clean install.

To some people, (me, for example) "download" means to get a file off the Web. "Install" means to install software from a file, optical disk, or USB flash drive. I'm not a lexicographer, but it's good to avoid confusion.

What means are you using to upgrade? DVD?

It would have been a good idea to back up (image) your old iIn7 installation before trying the upgrade.

My own preferred method is to copy all of my files and other things like web browser favorites onto another drive, and then to clean install the new version of Windows. It's a fair bit of work to re-install all of the applications, but I've had poor luck with the upgrade-in-place option before.

You will need to back up all of your data; That's why Theog gave you the links to instructions. If you back up the data, you won't lose it.

Read Theo's message and then click on each of the links to see what's there and what you should do next. Once that's done, you should have a pretty good grounding on what to do and expect.
