laptop arrived today preinstalled with w8 home, not started on it yet can you answer these points please before i start [i have spend last couple of weeks reading up on w8 in prep]

1] last min chage of spec, laptop now has a small 8gb ssd drive plus a normall hdd...do i install all programs eg office, security etc on the hdd and leave ssd to w8 and its updates only.

2] when i download software that does not mention 64 0r 32 bit can i presume thats ok, i know all drivers must be 64bit.

3] it has intel plus nvidia graphics, the later apparently takes over when the intel one starts to lag. now to update nvidia drivers can i do this direct from nvidia [as in a desktop] or should i stick with the laptop makers driver list [in this case samsung series7 laptop].

4] another change of spec ms office starter for unkown reason not preinstalled, i have a copy I downloaded &saved and used on my net book should this be ok to put on w8 as it only came with a trial version which i will delete first.

thanks

Microsoft states a minimum size of 16GB for 32 bit Windows install and 20GB for 64 bit. On a 64 bit machine, two folders are created for Programs, one marked x86 is where 32 bit programs will be installed. Stick with the graphics drivers issued by the OEM.

just been to samsung web site this is how they describe it.

"[h=3]Samsung Fast Solutions with ExpressCache™[/h]Innovative ExpressCache™* technology provides 8GB of flash memory on the motherboard that works as an ultra fast HDD. Its intelligent, automatic caching takes 43%** less time to boot up and starts Internet Explorer and frequently used applications 2 times faster, while still maintaining the safety and integrity of your data."

not got started yet still trying to iron out the 4 questions, does what I have psted above help. in the store it worked very fast and seemed ok.

2. Windows x64 isn't picky about software being 32 or 64 bit . . . There aren't all that many 64 bit programs out there, although dual core systems have been around for quite awhile. I believe the same goes for drivers; after all, they're just software too. However, if you find both 32 bit and 64 bit drivers, by all means, use the 64 bit ones.

3. I normally let Windows Update take care of my nVidia drivers; however, the other day, nVidia offered a new driver for my GeForce GT 7300. I let it install and have had no problems.

4. Depends on whether the version of Office that came with your computer is the starter version or not. If it is, then it's probably just easier to install from "inside" Windows 8, rather than use the downloaded version. Gotta ask . . . have you actually tried to open Microsoft Word or another of the Office programs to be sure it's not already installed? It may tell you it's the trial version and ask for a product key.

Your 8GB SSD is only a caching device for your HDD. You cannot install anything on there - it is far too small for Windows 8.

1] last min chage of spec, laptop now has a small 8gb ssd drive plus a normall hdd...do i install all programs eg office, security etc on the hdd and leave ssd to w8 and its updates only. What is such a small SSD to be used for? Are you sure about the size?

2] when i download software that does not mention 64 0r 32 bit can i presume thats ok, i know all drivers must be 64bit. Yes, almost all "good" 32-bit software runs fine on 64-bit.

3] it has intel plus nvidia graphics, the later apparently takes over when the intel one starts to lag. now to update nvidia drivers can i do this direct from nvidia [as in a desktop] or should i stick with the laptop makers driver list [in this case samsung series7 laptop]. At the outset, yes, stick with the OEM drivers. If all is good, then don't switch. Switching can cause problems. If you decide to switch, then see these NVIDIA instructions.

4] another change of spec ms office starter for unkown reason not preinstalled, i have a copy I downloaded &saved and used on my net book should this be ok to put on w8 as it only came with a trial version which i will delete first. Generally speaking you can't just copy and paste to get working programs. Maybe you should get Open Office (free).

thanks

Don't understand why? Maybe print screen key will do it. I never do screen shots if not logged in--so don't know.

I assume you are running IE in metro. I am not on Win8 machine now--on MacBook Pro--so my specifics will be limited. But, start IE from your desktop. Choose the gear icon. Look around for the option to use IE in desktop mode. The setting you want to select is strangely named IMO, but you'll probably figure out what I am talking about. I would use Chrome anyway. If you decide to do so, then leave IE as default browser.

3] have many passwords on Norton vault although its enabled in manage addons its not visible. Don't know what the issue is, but I know nothing about Norton vault.

4] how do you search this charms thing just searches apps? Active the charm bar choose search. As I recall, under the search box, there are other options.

sorted that screen and login with the netplwiz cmd. ontop of most things now.

one surprise the samsung laptop battery is not removable, so i am having to unplug the mains rather than remove the battery but its been going 5 hours so far with all the scans, reboots, updates, installs etc.

also these apps they take ages to open even minesweeper and solitair, is dragging them sideways off the screen the only way to close them, ESC button does not remove them no option in right click either to shut them down.

3] have many passwords on Norton vault although its enabled in manage add-ons its not visible.

In Chrome the Norton Vault is always there.

My Vault (in IE 10) only shows up when I try to log in somewhere.

laptop arrived today preinstalled with w8 home, not started on it yet can you answer these points please before i start [i have spend last couple of weeks reading up on w8 in prep]

4] another change of spec ms office starter for unkown reason not preinstalled, i have a copy I downloaded &saved and used on my net book should this be ok to put on w8 as it only came with a trial version which i will delete first.

thanks

You can get the nvidia drivers from their website. After that in the nvidia control panel you can set that the High Performance GPU is always used.
