Is there a way to convert HDD to GPT without wipeout OS 7

My HDD currently have windows 7 with 3 partitions and I want to dual boot with windows 8 in one of the empty partition, but the install is failed "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks."

If I do the Diskpart Clean command, will it wipe out the entire HDD and windows 7 OS? if so, is there a way to convert HDD to GPT without wipe out windows7 OS on the HDD?

    Thanks in advance

    Hello Toro,

Sorry, but no since the hard drive is converted during installation.
If you like, you could just install Windows 8 with "legacy BIOS" (normal) on the other partition instead of with UEFI to not have to worry about having to start over with Windows 7 as well.

    Thanks for quick replied.

I try to do the normal install on the other 2 partitions, but none of the 2 partitions work.

it said "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks."

Sounds like you are trying to use Windows 8 installation media created for UEFI installations like below.

Do you have a Windows 8 USB or DVD without UEFI to use to install normally?

I prefer to use bootable USB flash drives to install Windows.

With my motherboard (Asus P9X79 Pro), if the USB flash drive is formatted as NTFS, only an MBR type installation is permitted. I had to use a FAT32 version to permit a UEFI installation.

I have a bootable USB drive which was created when i download from the MS upgrade website. how can you tell if you have a Windows 8 installation media (USB) created for UEFI installations or not?

I don't know how universal this is, but with my motherboard, an NTFS formatted USB drive can only be used for a traditional MBR installation.

A FAT32 formatted one can be used for a UEFI/GPT installation. I'm not sure whether it can be used for an MBR installation on a system that supports UEFI as well.

It depends on which method I posted above that you used to create the bootable USB with. I would recommend using the method below to for a non UEFI installation.

Create Bootable USB or DVD with Windows 8 ISO
