    Catastrophe!

Had a minor problem with my internet toolbar this morning and thought I'd try a system restore to get things back to the way they were.

Unfortunately - I did a 'Computer Refresh' and seem to have lost everything I had - all my systems etc., seem to have disappeared and all I'm left with is my documents/pics/music etc. etc., thank goodness for that at least.

Please tell me all is not lost? Or do I have to start from scratch. My fav sites should be easy enough to get back, but I've lost my Norton security/the sites that were on the computer when I got it/word start etc. etc.

Any advice would be much appreciated - before I throw myself off the nearest tall building. (Hangs head in shame!)

When you did Refresh, all third party apps were deleted and have to be reinstalled. Metro apps were not affected.

If you had an image backup, it would have saved you in this instance.

Sorry to be so dumb - but what are 'Metro' apps? Computer novice here! (obviously - or I wouldn't have been so stupid)!

Metro apps are what you may have downloaded and installed from the Microsoft Store.

We all went through the novice part once.

If you were thoughtful enough you've made some backups (right?) of all your programs installers and data that can be easily re-installed after a refresh.

Otherwise you have download all you programs from scratch.

One or the other way all has to be re-installed and also all newer drivers that are recommended for third party devices.

    Good luck

Not thoughtful enough, I'm afraid. I've managed to get back my IE and favourite sites, etc., but am waiting for something 'NOT to work' which was previously working. Then - I'm going to back up everything once I find out the best way to do that.

    Thanks anyway.

If you want to create an image backup, you could use Macrium Reflect, Aomei Backuper orEaseUS ToDo backup these are free.

OK thanks - will have a look at those. At the moment I'm trying to sort out my Norton antivirus - which I lost also - and am having problems getting that back now. I'd go without - but it was part of the package when I bought my computer and is free for another 9 months.

Please see my sig for future reference. I am very sorry you've had such a rough start. Fortunately, thought, you did a refresh not a reset--in which case everything would be gone.

Refresh your PC—Attempts to solve system problems by replacing system files without affecting user data files. Such files still should be backed up. Installed programs will have to be reinstalled except those from the Windows Store. A list of uninstalled programs is provided. Settings will be maintained.

Reset your PC—Formats, removes everything, and reinstalls Win8. Not even settings maintained. Be well backed up.
