It begs the question as to why system restore was deactivated/removed. I've tried to re-enable it, but for the life of me can't get it to work. This was one of the most useful features of Windows 7 and has saved my hide many a time.

Confused here. You say "deactivated/removed?" Why? I can understand how you might not be able to get it to work. Not sure why not. Are other things not working correctly?

Sorry, but System Restore bears no resemblence to Refresh or Reset. All System Restore DID was overwrite current versions of system apps and setting with older versions. The actual name should have been "Operating System Restore" since that is what it really did.

System restore resets the OS to a previously good version ie if you installed some program and it caused issues, you could go back to a previous version (prior to install) and that program would effectively not have existed. I can't seem to do that with Windows 8. I found the system restore feature, but cannot activate it so that it creates restore points.

I understood what you said, but the two things you said don't seem to go together. Please see my prior reply, and please clarify. What Mark Phelps said seems off base. OP was not able to do a system restore--which is why I think you said what you did.

System restore simply doesn't appear to work. I can't get it to start recording restore points.

I've tried that, but I'll have another look.

I tried it again and all the settings are for system restore to be on, but when I opened system restore, it informed me that there were no restore points, even though I'd made a manual restore point earlier. I did another manual restore point, checked that it was there and I will see if this is kept, or disappears like the earlier one.
