If you don't have MC, you need to purchase the Windows Pro Pack for $69.

Add features - Microsoft Windows

If you have MC or bought the Windows Pro Pack, already, there's nothing to worry about if you have to re-install Windows.

MC is not part of Windows 8 Pro.

So I went ahead and requested a key to download windows media center which was sent to me it installed correctly. My question is if I have to format my drive how would I go about getting the windows media center again ?

If you re-install from the download you got, then punching in that key, again, I believe.

I think that you perform your re-install from standard Windows 8 Pro media with your WMC product key that came with your Media Center email and then your system is automatically updated - if this is wrong, please would someone tell us what the process might be?

- as JLyman above seems to confirm

WMC is considered an "added feature." Just like if you added a feature in an older version of windows, that configuration would only exist so long as it is installed. Re-installing the OS from scratch lays down the stock configuration because it is pulling from a stock source. I haven't heard any news on this yet so don't hold me to it but I thought I read somewhere about WMC being automatically updated by Windows Update if you claimed the key on the account you used to set up the system.
