Here is how my laptop is set up with 4 drives.
If and when 8 becomes available, is it possible to use "D" drive to load and use 8 as an OS on it?
That way I would have 7 on "C" and 8 would be on "D"....
Thanks in Advance.

I would think so Dennis. If those are separate physical drives each OS would need the 100MB boot partition. If they are external (how do you get 4 HDD's in a laptop) they would need to connect via eSATA or to the laptop board directly.

Haven't taken it apart yet as it would break the warranty but it came built that way from Sam's Club.
Here's what I found.

You can still put Windows 8 on that partition.

Mount or expand the Windows 8 ISO file of your choice. Get imagex.exe and use it to image your D: drive with the default Windows 8 image and make the disk bootable. Replace x in the diskpart commands below with the number of the d: volume from the lis vol command.
Code:
imagex /apply g:\sources\install.wim 4 d:\
bcdboot d:\windows /s d: /v
diskpart
lis vol
sel vol x
act
exi

You could use your old desktop, as Windows 8 Test Rig.

If you use Windows 7 disk management to delete the D: partition and then use disk management to recreate a partition of that unallocated space it will be an Extended partition by default and then you could have as many Logical drives as there are available drive letters.

Then you could install any Windows OS to a Logical drive and it will not interfere with the "System" boot files and whenever you need to remove the "new" Windows it would be as simple as just deleting that Logical in disk management.

Have a look at this tutorial at the link below for some info.

I would use Virtual Box for the early distros - e.g. the beta versions. It is the approach that gives you the least trouble. If you don't like it or want to change it, you only have to delete 2 folders.

I have done that with the Win7 Beta and it worked like a charm. It was not even much slower - just a bit.

Else I would subscribe to the advice that Ted gave. With 4 primary partitions you are stuck right now.

If you install it as dual boot, I recommend you image the 100MB active partition (if present) BEFORE you install /8. Then, if you ever want to get rid of /8, just restore that image and the /8 partition becomes a plain data partition which you can reformat, delete or whatever, Your original bootmgr will be back with the restore of the 100MB partition and win7 seven will boot as before.

If you happen to have 2 or more HDDs in your system, unplug all HDDs except the one where you want to install /8 (this must have no OS on it). Then install /8 on the connected HDD and switch the Operating System with the BIOS boot sequence.

Wolfgang,
Thanks for all your input...Much appreciated.
To date I haven't done anything yet mostly because I am not that savvy to mess with it yet.
When I get the time and written instructions will give it a go.
Thanks everyone for all your input.

You are right. I am in no hurry with /8 either. Will wait for the official Beta. I may install it on one of my HDDs that is still housing Vista or in a virtual machine. I used vBox for the /7 Beta and that worked very well.
