Clean Install Windows 8 64bit over 32bit using another CD?

So I upgraded to Windows 8 from XP via unlock key without CD, forgetting that it'd be 32bit too.. I'm making a rebuild soon and I think 64bit would really benefit me, apart from some programs I use that are being discontinued in 32bit. A friend of mine recently upgraded to Win 8 too, but he bought the CD. Could I use his CD to overwrite my Win 8 32bit with a 64bit one? And another question: if I could (and I hope I can) is there an option during install to leave some free space for Linux? Having Windows 8 only is not safe ..

    Thanks in advance.

Installing under BIOS or UEFI? I assume your friend has two DVD's--one 32 bit and one 64 bit.

BIOS. UEFI is quite a new thing isn't it? I built my rig 4 years ago so probably doesnt have it.. Although I still don't get exactly what it is.. gotta investigate.

Remember one product key one install at a time. It looks like you have a separate key for yourself. For BIOS, you can easily create another partition after install. May not be as easy, but you should be able to do the same thing under UEFI. I am not as familiar with UEFI--which is more complicated).

    Probably BIOS. For BIOS,

Study all the tutorials below before beginning your installation. Be sure you are well backed up before beginning.

Use How to Do a Clean Install - Windows 8 (Using Install Medium and BIOS).1 Follow up with Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade if needed for activation. Activation complexities can occur. Your last resort would be phone activation.

1Using the steps in this tutorial results in partitioning and formatting.

    For UEFI,

Study all the tutorials below before beginning your installation. Be sure you are well backed up before beginning.

Use UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 8 (using retail upgrade install DVD (and, thus, with UEFI support).1 You will be referred to both of these tutorials as you proceed: Clean Install - Windows 8 and Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade. Follow up with Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade if needed for activation. Activation complexities can occur. Your last resort would be phone activation.

You can use the 64bit CD to re-install with the same W8 key you used with the 32bit installation.
During the installation when it asks where to install, click on "Drive options (advanced)" and you can make a partition by clicking "New" and make it any size you want..
You can also set the partitions how you want them before the installation or make another partition after the installation.

It's easier to have a partition for the OS and another partition for your personal data, makes re-installing faster and you won't loose any of your data.

With only 2gb of ram, I would stay with x32.

Thanks, so I can actually reinstall Windows 8 keeping Fedora? Would make it much easier.

You said: "Could I use his CD to overwrite my Win 8 32bit with a 64bit one?" Yes. Not sure how hard it will be to get Fedora going again if you do clean install--whether moving to 64 bit or staying with 32 bit.

Regardless, I'd still do a clean install if staying with 32-bit.
To be clear, do you have an ISO from a 32-bit download? If not, then go here: Windows 8 Upgrade ISO - Download or Create. You might as well have an ISO. Could create your own install DVD.
