How am I suppose to install windows 8 on a new motherboard if all there is are the upgrade versions of the disc? I have vista on my old motherboard but that doesn't seem to be working any more. When trying to install it i get an error reading The computer started using he Windows installation media. Remove the installation media and restart your computer so that windows starts normally. then, insert the install media and restart the upgrade. Why does every single bad thing about upgrading to a new computer happen to me?

What type of installation media are you using, and where did you get it from?

Your install media is looking for a working copy of windows to see if you qualify for the upgrade.

So what you're saying is it's impossible to install windows 8 on a new motherboard? Vista is in my hard drive, so I dont understand what the issue is.

No, because the hard drive was from my old motherboard, and if im correct from what I keep hearing is that that hard drive is sort of locked to the old motherboard until i format it, which I didnt know about till it was too late because im an idiot. I have tried running that hdd on the new mobo and all that comes up is the startup repair window like in a loop no matter how many times you do it.

Just do a clean install with an upgrade copy of Windows , if that is not what you are trying to do and make sure you set your bios to boot from the CD-DVD Rom for installation. Read tutorial in the beginning of the thread. Clean install with Windows 8 upgrade. Good Luck.

As your Vista licesne is tied to the old motherboard, you will need a full version of Windows 8.

Try Cleaning the HD Drive, using Step one in this tutorial:

Would i be able to install windows 8 64 if I install a vista 32? Nevermind, im sure that vista disc is just another upgrade. So really the only way to install an os on a new motherboard is to get the oem? Ive heard that it's really annoying to do.

I found an old windows 7 os dell disc from a computer my mom is using. Would I be able to use this?

The Dell disk may refuse to install Win7 on your new machine. (I assume that it's not a Dell.)

Even if it did, you'd be breaking the license agreement for the Win8 upgrade. You don't have a legitimate qualifying OS for the upgrade.

However, what you want to do is supposed to be possible, even if not consistent with the license. I have not yet installed Win8 on a blank hard drive using an upgrade license, but you have already been given links as to how to do it. An upgrade-in-place (that would preserve installed programs) is not permitted from Vista to 8, so you won't lose much by a clean install.

Buy Windows - Microsoft Windows

(mentions that XP SP3 or Vista users will not be able to preserve installed applications).

I don't expect you to like this, but:

Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows 8 Professional 64-bit (Full Version) - Operating Systems

(Win8 Pro System Builder, $140US, free shipping.) It may be possible to return the $70 retail upgrade package, although you may have to do it through Microsoft.

Thats sort of what im asking, is the oem the only way to get os 8 on a new mobo? Also isnt the oem a handsome frog to deal with?
