    Windows 8 Crashing after several minutes

    Good afternoon all,

    My partner's PC decided to start acting up on windows xp, so after a few attempts to fix it we decided to go down the windows 8 option since it was on special offer at the time. After a few installations failed to boot properly (i.e. they'd install and then crash) we did a complete format and reinstall. As it stands we can get into windows 8, it works fine for a few minutes and then it crashes (no BSOD, just a freeze, no mouse movement etc). We've tried a couple of fixes (ran "bcdedit /set disabledynamictick no" and yes in cmd and refreshing the install) unfortunately nothing seems to stop it from crashing 3-5 minutes into the boot. Was wondering if anyone here would be so kind as to point me in a possible direction

    Specs are as follows

    ASROCK N68C-S UCC (flashed to 1.6 latest bios)
    AMD Phenom 8550 2.2ghz triplecore
    4 GB nonspecific memory (2x2GB
    ATi 5770 Gfx
    Samsung 350gb hard drive
    TP-LINK TL-WN851ND Wireless card
    430W Corsair Power supply

    Many thanks in advance

    How does it run if you boot to Safe Mode with Networking? If okay, then do Windows Updates from there a few times and see if that resolves the issue, which may be device driver related.

    Also test the ram. Download Memtest86+ (you want the 2nd one Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)). Unzip it then create a CD from the iso file using your CD burning software. There is a good freeware burner called ImgBurn which will do this easily.

    DO NOT burn the .iso file directly to CD. It must be used as input to a program that knows what to do with it, like the one I mentioned above.

    You can do this on any computer that has a working CD Burner.

    Boot the CD and run for at least 3 complete passes unless it shows errors sooner than that. An overnight run is even better.

    I would also Check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.

    Thank you both for your responses, I'm running the memory test at the moment and then will try safemode with networking to attempt an update, and then the HDD test.

    I think its the problem With your PSU.
    According to ATI the HD 5770 requirements are:-
    Minimum= 450 Watt
    Recommended= 600 Watt
    So, I would suggest you to upgrade your PSU to atleast 600 Watt or greater for optimal performance......

    Good call Narayan, we can't afford a shiny new PSU at the moment but what we can do is scale back to a 520GT on the graphics front and see if that fixes it.

    In other news mem test has done 1 pass and come back clean, will report as soon as I know more

    Right, Mem test came back clean after 3 passes. Swapped out the 5770 for a 520GT, windows started failing to boot, so tried to refresh install, which failed. Did full reinstall, it's now crashing on the startup screen (even in safe mode), though may be same symptom as before just crashing earlier

    Not sure what your budget is for a PSU, but I've purchased a few from Computer parts, Laptop computers, Desktop computers, Computer Hardware - They have some economical options and I've had good results with them.

    Cheers for the link mbratch, in the UK here and the reality is we could get a corsair 600cx for £50 (~$80), but seems a waste if that graphics card isnt going to be pushed (the missus is quite happy playing tf2 and indie/low demand games) so happy to swap out to the 520GT that came with the PC if that's what's causing the problem. Will try to boot/repair/safemode a few more times tommorow morning and report back

    try defragging the HD:

    Control Panel - in search field at upper-right, type in Defrag

    AusLogics free defrag program, available from

    ScanDisk used to be a separate program that came with windows that could be used to repair harddrives
    see Perform a Scan-Disk Function using Windows XP - YouTube for details.

    ScanDisk is now CheckDisk, which is available only through the GUI now... It's in MyComputer | Click once on the C: drive | Left mouse click for Properties | Tools | Error-Checking -> Click on Check
    btw: Disk Defragmenter is also available on the same panel/dialog window.
