Okay, so basically I formatted my whole hard drive, losing all my recovery/backup partitions. I was wondering, if I have a Windows 8 ISO (legal and legit), could I just install it on the computer and it would auto-activate, or would there be extra steps I would need to take? My computer came preinstalled with Windows 8..

Someone may come along after me with a better response. But, I am not sure. I would say probably not. Any ISO you download will most likely be a retail version. I know in Windows 7 retail versions will not work as an OEM version. The worst that can happen is you install the ISO and it not work. Try to use the key located on the bezel with the ISO.

You can always call your OEM and see what they can do about getting you an OEM version.

Welcome to EightForums.

Where do you buy your Windows 8 DVD & product key from?

Can be done. If you don't already have the ISO, then you could obtain it using the upgrade process on another upgradeable computer having the "bitness" you want (actually this "bitness" matter can be ignored--see last link). See this thread and this tutorial. Phone activation probably required if you don't have an upgradeable installation on your machine when you install. Also, see--installing under UEFI. And, see posts 11 - 28 on this thread if you want pursue an option where you switch "bitness" from what you got in the ISO download.
