    Windows reinstall problem

    Hi everyone,

I really hope someone can help me with this issue. I currently have had windows 8 installed since November 2012 and just recently have come across a number of issues for example specific services not loading correctly at strange error messages appearing so I want to reinstall windows but KEEP all my applications and files.

So I entered my windows 8 cd and put in my product license code and if you look at the image attached, it only gives me the option to keep my files and not my applications (like it does in the right picture attached).

I really hope someone can help because I really dont want to do a clean install as it will take me a long long time to reinstall all my applications and copy my files back on.

    Thanks a lot

You are attempting what is (or maybe what WAS) referred to in the IT world as a dirty re-install.

Windows 8 has no way of knowing this is what you are trying to do.

It will create a windows.old folder and put your program files folder and other stuff into that folder for you but your
apps will have to be re-installed no matter what.

It will only attempt to keep the programs intact on an actual upgrade. You are not upgrading. You are re-installing the
    same version.

    64-bit Windows 10

    Hello Swifty,

Sorry, but you only get the "Keep Windows settings, personal files and applications" if you run the Windows setup in Vista or Windows 7. In Windows 8, you only get the "Keep personal files only" option instead.

If you like, you might consider refreshing Windows 8 instead. It will not keep any installed 3rd party desktop programs, but you'll keep more.

    Refresh Windows 8

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn
