Upgrade to Windows 8 with only a product key - Microsoft Windows

Have your product key handy. You can find it in your online order information, in the confirmation email for your purchase, or on the packaging. The product key will look something like this:
    XXXXX- XXXXX- XXXXX- XXXXX- XXXXX

Make a backup of everything you want to keep. Save it somewhere you can get to it later, like an external drive or a DVD.

Always better to do a clean install.

Why do you choose the N version instead of the regular one (Windows 8 Pro N vs Windows 8 Pro)?
Maybe that is the bottleneck, from non-N version to N one.

You can get N through Technet if you are an appropriate level subscriber. Win8 Technet software is for evaluation purposes only. On the other hand, I once had a Technet version installed and didn't want to reinstall. Purchased a system builder version and called MS. MS said don't bother to reinstall--having bought a full install version, even system builder, was good enough. You have a path to N here, albeit a pretty expensive one.

I didn't go thru all of that crap, all I did was use my COA, and changed it with the TechNet RTM, and viola. Full version of Windows 8 Pro, no reinstall needed.

I felt that I had an obligation to at least buy a full install version of Win7 to justify continuing to use the Technet install. MS agreed. I'm happy and so, apparently, is at least one MS rep. Call it "crap" if you want.
