Msata does not boot.

I'm working with a Lenovo Y580 - 59359513. It comes with windows 8 preinstalled, uefi and all that other jazz. I've made my recovery usb drive, I've made my system image. The msata I installed is an m4 msata 256GB CT256M4SSD3. This drive is recognized in the bios. The disc shows in windows 8 install process. This drive formats and partitions in disk management. The 1 TB HDD is removed. I'm contemplating using it in another system possibly. Was originally going to keep it as a storage drive but I realized my ps3 could use the storage upgrade.

After not being able to recover via a lenovo provided recovery solution, I decided to Download en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso and checked it against the hash SHA-1: 1CE53AD5F60419CF04A715CF3233F247E48BEEC4

I make a DVD and a bootable usb both of which boot just fine. It seems to accept my bios stored key as it doesn't prompt for one. Everything is good until I choose my SSD partition. I get:

"Windows can't be installed on drive 1 partition 4. (Show details)"

partition 4 is the primary partition the installer creates for me when I delete all partitions and have it repartition for me. Showing details gets me:

"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

I've heard of many people booting off of their msata. One person I remember having the same exact model as me. Sata controller is AHCI. Well I disregard and I install anyway. It installs but when it reboots, it goes back to booting to the windows media. My SSD is not listed as a boot device in boot manager. My computer fails to boot even if I remove the install media. I have no clue what to do. What am I missing?

I have been following those threads. But I don't see any info for my situation. I'm doing a clean install with windows 8 install media. If my install won't boot, I don't see how migrating would do anything different for me.

Are booting the DVD in uEFI mode?

Yes sir. Both dvd and usb read as EFI and boot through secureboot which is enabled.

Edit: Another tidbit of info. My usb thumbdrive of my oem recovery drive recognizes the windows 8 install allowing me to use it on my msata ssd. I recovered using the OEM windows 8 recovery drive but it still isn't bootable.

Yep, I know. Thats why I'm so frustrated. This SHOULD have been simple from day 1. I simply have no clue what to do. I'm familiar with the threads in the lenovo forum as well as several others. I don't know why I am having trouble. I have been researching my y580 since I bought it a month ago.

This a only a warning for PC with non-uEFI/BIOS firmware.

You have uEFI, click OK, than NEXT.

I did attempt an install anyway.

I will redo this process even though I recall doing it before at some point. I don't expect it to work.

What Bios options do you have for the mSATA slot? Is there a place in your Bios to set the drive to primary. You might check a Boot tab for such a thing. I just suggest this because the mSATA may not be treated the same as an SSD.

Did the system have an mSATA drive when you got it? If it did, do you know what is was being used for?

Was the SATA controller set to AHCI originally?

The install attempt did not boot after recleaning and redoing the gpt conversion. Reboots after initial install back into installation media. Drive does not show in boot list. removal of media results in no boot at all.

I have nothing to configure except Sata Controller Mode which is AHCI by default. This msata slot is present on all y580s and can come preconfigured for a cache drive. I elected for a model that would not have a cache drive preinstalled as I planned to order my 256 gb. My boot tab has the option for boot mode which is uefi. and usb boot which is enabled. Below that is the boot priority list which does not list my mSSD.

I just went to the Crucial site to check for compatibility. If I go to the mSATA's page, with I tried to link below, it appears it is not compatible.

If this is correct, I wonder if a bios update for your system, or a firmware update for the drive might help. And it seems they may have a new one, depending on what you already have.

One of the comments on that same page says the drive is being used as a boot device on a Lenovo Y580

Most likely, I'm going to bet they've locked me out of booting to my msata in this new hardware set. That guy probably has a win 7 model y580 and they take different bios. I had no clue from the beginning that using the m4 msata was going to be any different on the win 8 y580 then it had been on the win 7 y580. No bios updates, no hacked bios updates and the firmware upgrade for the drive itself is not UEFI compatible yet. PITA to consider reselling my drive to get something I can use right now. Lenovo is so infuriating to block this on purpose.
