That's why I'm so frustrated. It didn't ship with any installation media, and now I'm have no idea what to do. I've got a copy of the 64 bit installer that I used for my desktop, and the only other person I know with win 8 has also got a 64 bit one. Aaarghhh!!! I've been trying to get the Indonesian HP service centre on the phone with no luck, yet. It's the 30th of December, they might actually be off.

If someone you know has a 32bit Windows 8 (not pro or enterprise, just Windows 8) installation ISO or USB key with legit media, that would work.
Yeah, that's why I'm asking around the internet. Though if the hash matches the one from:
    MSDN Subscriber Downloads

Wouldn't that mean that it's legit? (the copy, I mean. Not the means by which I got it)

You may find that there is no code in the BIOS.
I know that's a possibility, if you were in my position what would you do? I can't go to Australia and get it replaced. I can't get to a HP service centre in Indonesia. I mean what else could I do but try? I've contacted HP support and they haven't been helpful. If I can't find a way to get something done all I'm left with is a thousand dollar paper weight.

    I'm pretty desperate.

I personally would return to Retailer or HP/Compaq.

I've contacted HP support and they haven't been helpful
    What did they say?

The MSDN media should work, yes - if you have access to download the 32bit non-pro/non-enterprise version from MSDN or TechNet, it should work.

Yes, I would do that as well. If I had the option to. They kept passing me off to different people. Basically they were going on about getting installation media.

Well, hopefully I'll be able to get that. Though is it really possible to do so without having the s/n?

Again, if your unit is legit (and it looks it), you don't need a serial number to install the version of Windows that (should have) shipped with the unit. It's part of the BIOS itself.

Alright, cool. I'll try it out and report back. Though, download speeds here are 50 kbps on a good day, so it might be a while.

Thanks a bunch internet stranger, I'm now a little less stressed and angry.

Yes. I own a hp. While installing Windows 8. It won't ask for any product key. I just asks for activation after installation. The product key might be bundled with the system.

You said you purchased it now. So you need to get 64bit Windows installation image or DVD, and not 32bit.
Or Else you would get into trouble of hardware incompatibility, Like lesser RAM, Integrated graphics becomes non-responsive frequently. Because most HP notebooks come with uEFI and Secureboot feature to support windows 8 64bit (x64) only.

Distributing Windows 8 image is illegal and also downloading it from sources other than Microsoft is illegal too.
Get Windows 8 setup App from Microsoft.
Buy Product Key or get it from HP Support for your device. then download ISO.
Burn it Using Windows 7 DVD/USB tool.
Then Boot the media and install.

Imrankhan, considering it ships with Windows 8 32bit and has 2GB RAM, I'm not sure 64bit is wise on that hardware. HP designed it for Windows 8 32bit, so compatibility with the proper drivers and HP software (if desired) should be good.
