Hi there
A colleague of mine got an HP ENVY ultrabook with W8 pre-installed plus a retail W8 pro upgrade for an extra 22 EUR.
He asked my to see if I could upgrade the machine to W8 Pro and install the IS display language pack for him.

The system has one of those wretched UEFI Boot thingy's in the BIOS.

I haven't been able to upgrade the installed windows 8 to Windows PRO -- and even trying to install from scratch via booting from an external USB DVD drive it just says after about 15 mins through the process "Windows 8 cannot be installed".

Fortunately the version of ACRONIS I use works with UEFI boot so I managed to take a backup before I started and was able to restore the original image that it had when it came out of the store -- I'd wiped the HDD when trying to install the Retail W8 Pro version- but the restore worked fine so the machine is in exactly the same state as it was when it came out of the store.

However I still would like to upgrade the machine to W8 Pro - mainly in order to change the display language from En to Is and to allow remote desktop connection to THIS computer.

You need at least W8 Pro for RDP to work correctly --you can RDP to OTHER machines using any version of W8 - but you need at least W8 PRO to allow incoming RDP connections.

Any help on upgrading a UEFI BIOS enabled machine to W8 Pro. The W8 PRO is the RETAIL version -- and the Windows version is X-64 English.

I've done loads and loads of Windows installs / re-installs etc but this HP machine has got me 100% totally flummexed.

I'm glad so far my other machines don't use UEFI BIOSES.

Cheers

Hi everyone
Thanks for the replies

Solved it by " Add features to Windows" ===> I already have a product key at "Enter Product key" and using the product key I had from TechNet for Windows W8 PRO. After Install was complete I Then made Install media -- wiped the disk and installed from scratch with the media I had created.

installed IS language packs for Windows display language and Office 2010 -- worked fine too.

For some B/S reason the "Upgrade Media" that came from the store didn't work -- not sure if I can bother with the hassle of getting the 20 EUR back !!. The TechNet key worked 100% correctly first time.

Note I had to DISABLE the PROTECTED BOOT but the UEFI stuff worked OK.

Got some free Booze for my efforts (actually Win 8 Forums and SHAWN particularly who put me on to the right track). :dinesh:

Cheers
