    Creating Recovery Disk

I have a new HP Pavilion dv4-511cl that I've just upgrades to win8. Before I start logging a lot of software on it, I want to create what I think is call a Recovery DVD(s) or something that makes an image of the PC in it's current state, in case in the future I have problems and want to go back to the relative clean state of the PC.

Ho do I create a copy of what I need to be able to retore the PC.

Also, is there anything else you would suggest I need to do before I start loading software, contacts, photos, etc., etc.?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and detailed instructions!!

    Best regards,

Hello dfpavlock, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The links at the bottom of the webpage below at HP can help show you how to do a factory recovery to restore Windows 8 back to factory conditions on your notebook.

    Shawn,

Thank you very much for the very quick response!!

The link you sent me does a very good job explaining how to factory recovery, however, I thought I needed to create some sort of recovery disk(s) so that if I ever have to do a recovery, I would have an image of my current PC which would include wins 8 and Office 2010 Plus?

    Two questions ...

Do I need to create some sort of recovery disk(s)? If yes, please send me the link to create the recovery disk(s)?

    Best regards,

    You're welcome.

Yes, your OEM computer has a factory recovery partition included that is used to restore Windows back to factory conditions.

It would also be a good idea to create a recovery USB as well to have handy in case something should happen to your hard drive or the recovery partition. You would be able to use the recovery USB to restore with, and to a new hard drive if needed.

I bought a new HP desk top a couple of weeks ago with Windows 8. And I made a set of recovery discs. It took three high capacity discs *(4.7 GB ) and probably 20 - 30 minutes. If you use lesser capacity you will have a "bunch" of discs.

As the HP post link instruction says: Move the mouse arrow into the upper right corner and the charms will appear including the search window. Type in - recovery - and a popup instruction will appear. It's really very simple. I just tried again and got the message essentially only one set. No more. So keep them in a safe place.

In the past I have had crashes and other problems that required ordering recovery discs from HP. Years back it took 16 discs but now many fewer. The factory recovery disc is specific only to your model. Won't work elsewhere. The down side is that it wipes everything and re-installs all original software. Any after market software is uninstalled. All files are removed. Any "60 day" trial software is reinstalled and you will be bugged to pay again. But a phone call to the tech support will fix that if you have your product key number.*( Be sure to save all product key numbers in a safe place ).

I always have external hard drives for backup. Your files can be stashed there and be available after recovery.

I've noticed on these forums that there are quite a few posts indicating that many people do not make recovery discs. And a moderator on another forum said: 88% of people do not back up their data !!!

A crash and recovery can be a very big and expensive ordeal costing a lot of money ordering new software and putting everything back in order.

Thank you for this detailed description of how to create a set of Recovery DVDs. I followed these instructions and they created 4 DVDs.

One last question ... On these 4 DVDs are not only the Win8 operating system, but other things that are already loaded onto the computer, like Office Plus 2010, correct?

Thanks again and Happy New Years!!!
