Install Win 8 Pro Upgrade 64 bit on a Vista 32 bit PC

I'm running a 32 bit Vista Home Premium HP desktop that has developed a corrupted file system on the hard drive. There is only one CEC error on the hard drive but it is causing a failure to create restore points. I've tried many fixes, such as chkdsk /r, which are unable to correct the problem. The software from the drive manufacturer wants to write zeros all over the drive to fix it. I don't have any Vista full install media, just a recovery set of disks.
I'd like to upgrade to Win 8 Pro 64 bit since I have to wipe the hard drive and reinstall an OS anyway. If I have to have Vista installed in order to get the Win 8 upgrade to install will I be able to reinstall Vista without the full install disks?
I have access to a 64 bit Win 7 PC that I could use to download the 64 bit Win 8 Pro upgrade ISO. I have the Vista product key.
Will I be able to install the Win 8 Pro upgrade on the hard drive after it has been wiped? If not, how could I get Vista reinstalled? If I get Vista reinstalled, will I be able to install Win 8 64 bit on top of the Vista 32 bit OS if I do a clean install? Could I fix the hard disk using the tools in the Win 8 Pro upgrade, like diskpart, instead of using the disk drive manufacturer's utility?
The PC has a 64 bit AMD dual core CPU and I've read that the 64 bit OS is more stable than the 32 bit OS. Should I even try to install Win 8 64 bit or just install Win 8 32 bit?

    Download the Windows 8 x64.

like diskpart, instead of using the disk drive manufacturer's utility?
Use the manufacturer's utility to repair.

No need to reinstall old Windows install.

Thanks for your quick response. From what I had read about installing the upgrade I wasn't sure if it could be installed on a hard drive that didn't have an old version of Windows on it.

Do you think that the 64 bit version of Win 8 is enough better than the 32 bit version to make it worth the effort of downloading it on another PC and deleting the stuff it will put on it? Will there be any drawbacks (incompatibilities) with 64 bit versus 32 bit?

I take it that you had checked your PC for x64 hardware & for Windows 8 x64 drivers.

Windows 8 x64 has incompatibility with older 64 bit Intel/AMD processors, & some Video/Graphic Cards.
You may find, you can olny install Windows 8 x32.

Thanks again. The update readiness tool keeps crashing so I looked up the devices on the MS compatibility site. It only says if they are compatible so I'd probably better stick with the 32 bit upgrade.
