Screen randomly goes blank, must re-boot

I have recently installed Windows 8 Pro on my PC, which is a Gateway FX, with a Dell 23" LED monitor.

For the most part, everything is fine. On occasion, however, the screen goes completely blank, and there is nothing I can do to "wake it up".

I have tried Ctrl-Alt-Del, the Windows key, right and left clicking the mouse, and nothing works. In order to get the screen to work again, I have to re-boot.

I don't know if this is a monitor issue, or a Windows 8 issue, although I never had this problem before installing Windows 8.

I don't even know how to trouble shoot this problem, so that I know which way to proceed.

Welcome to EightForums.

Have you updated all your drivers for Windows 8 from the Gateway web site.

I also have tried the following. I have a Gateway monitor that was attached to another PC in my home network. I switched the monitors, and the Dell monitor works fine on the other PC.

The Gateway monitor, however, manifests the same symptoms (problems) that the Dell did on the PC with Windows 8 installed. I also switched the HDMI cables, and the problem exists with both monitors, and with both HDMI cables attached. Seems to be a software problem, but I am at a loss. Help!

Since the problem appears to me monitor related, and since I have a DVI cable, and DVI connection on both my monitor and the PC, I decided to try connecting with DVI instead of HDMI.

Vioal! I have not had any problems since attaching via DVI.

Does anyone have any idea why HDMI is causing the problem, or how to get HDMI working properly with Windows 8?
