Hi, since installing windows 8 pro (suggested by the wizard) several apps fail to work. The caculator, internet options in the control panel and most important of all the help & support app. I originally downloaded Win 8 but also took the option of the disk as well, since receiving it I have repeated the download, choosing the option to retain my files. I am using a 64bit system . Can anyone suggest anything please

You can do a clean install, but you need to delete the old Windows install.

Welcome to EightForums.

No need to reinstall old Windows install.

Clean the HD Drive, using Step one in this tutorial:

You could first try SFC /SCANNOW.

Given an appropriate install medium, you also could try automatic repair:

Startup to installer DVD (or other install medium);
Choose language, etc.
Hit next
Choose “Repair your computer”
Choose “Troubleshoot” to see these options:
“Refresh your PC
Reset your PC
Advanced options”--Choosing this option gives these additional options:
“System Restore
System Image Recovery
Automatic Repair (choose this one)
Command Prompt”

And, you could try (couldn't exactly tell if you have done this):

Refresh your PC—Attempts to solve system problems by replacing system files without affecting user files (similar to what a repair install does WRT to system files at least under earlier Win versions). User files still should be backed up. Installed programs will have to be reinstalled except those from the Windows Store. A list of uninstalled programs is provided. Settings will be changed back to defaults. To do a refresh, you will need to have install media.” ”Install media” include an install disc, or course, an ISO, and perhaps a flash drive set up to install.

You also could try a system restore if there was a time where all your programs worked properly.

Thank you to all those who have sent me replies and good advice. In the end I decided to do option 3 on the disc, not saving any files, which seems to have done the trick. The one big problem I have now is that I forgot the first rule of computing. Back up ALL your files. Unfortunately I for got to back up all my photos. Is there anyway I can recover them or are they lost forever :(

Very sorry. I now you feel bad about your photos.

You could try data recovery software. And, while relatively expensive, you could take your computer to a data-recovery specialist. Using a specialist is the better way to go. Google on "data recovery yourcity." You should find your closely available alternatives. If you are going to go for data recovery, then stop using your computer until the data recover is attempted.
