Replacing Win 8 Pro 32 bit with 64 bit - How?

I upgraded my older, XP machine to Win 8 Pro. I did the on-line upgrade and all went well.
Turns out it was a 32 bit install, even though the PC was 64 bit capable. (I understand now this is due to upgrading from XP)

Yesterday I received my back up DVDs and decided to upgrade from the 32 bit version to the 64 bit version...
But nothing I've tried has worked.

Machine is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 w/Mach Speed MSNV-939 MB...I don't have anymore specs right now as I am at work.

1. Tried to upgrade from the 32 to 64 within windows 8 using the DVD. The installer said it couldn't do that.
2. Thought about reinstalling the XP OS, but figured I'd have the same issue being 32 bit.
3. Installed a copy of Vista 64 bit I had, (full copy, not upgrade). Went fine, so I confirmed 64 bit operation.
4. Tried to install Win 8 64 bit from DVD within Vista. All went well until the first reboot when it locked at the blue windows emblem.
5. Tried to boot from the Windows 8 DVD, immediately locked at the blue windows emblem.
6. Went back and reinstalled Vista 64, formatting the hard drive first. Then tried the Win 8 upgrade DVD. Again, installation seemed to work, but locked up on first reboot.
7. Last think I did was reinstall Vista 64 again and let it run through all 200+ updates thinking Win 8 needed something newer, maybe a driver...I don't know.
8. Went to bed.
9. My plan after work is to download the upgrade from Microsoft into Vista and try that.

Any thoughts...??
This is not my first rodeo and I am sure I must be missing something simple.

Thanks for any help,
Bob T.

Negative results.
The computer will not boot with the Win 8 64 bit DVD.

It will with the Vista 64...
It will with the Win 8 32 bit...

Tried the DISKPART clean option with both the Vista 64 and the Win 8 32 bit, but the Win 8 64 bit will not boot.
Locked at the little blue window startup screen.

I am going back to plan B...install Vista 64 and try to install from the download...

Looking on AsRock web site there are no Windows 8 supported drivers for the ASRock A780GXE, which may be where the problem is.

The AsRock MB in my profile is my main computer....which is still running Win 7.
I have Machspeed MSNV-939 in the machine I am trying to get Win 8 64 bit working.

UPDATE: The 32 bit version of Win 8 will boot fine for install...the 64 bit won't...

Makes me wonder whether you're actually booting from the DVD or launching it from Windows.

If the Win8 DVD is like that for 7, you can't launch it from a 32 bit version of Windows. You have to boot the PC from the DVD. A 32 bit older Windows (XP, Vista, 7) can be used to qualify the upgrade license, but you have to do a clean install. You can even reformat the drive in the process - the installer will remember that a qualifying OS had been present.

Nope, don't work. Tried it both ways. From inside windows, (Vista 64), and booting from 64 bit DVD.
I tried booting from the 64 bit DVD more than once and it won't even start. Just hangs at the blue window icon and goes no further.
Even tried it with a clean drive more than once.

The 32 bit DVD will boot and do a clean install.

Right now I suspect a hardware issue with this older MB. I've got a couple more ideas to try, but I may be stuck with the 32 bit version.

I would check on Machspeed web site for Windows 8 drivers.

Yes, I was there last night, but no luck. They direct you to the chipset manufactures.
Took the nVidia link, looked for the nFource 4 drivers for my MB and they only list nFource 5 and up.
I'll dig a little deeper when I get home tonight.

Thanks for all the help,
Bob

So no luck. Ran the upgrade adviser, only found a couple of minor software issues.
So ran the Win 8 upgrade from the download option, all went well until......

The first reboot. Then it locked up at the small, blue window logo...just like with the DVD.:(

Hit the reset and it gave me the option of starting Win 8 or Vista...tried 8, same thing.
Did it again and picked Vista...got a window that said, "Sorry we couldn't install Windows 8"...

So it looks like I am stuck with the 32 bit option for now...

Again, thanks for the help,
Bob T.

Updated my nFource 4 drivers this morning, but still no luck.

Did some Google work and found many people with the same issue...
Seems to be incompatibility with older 64 bit AMD processors...my Athlon 64 X2 was repeatedly mentioned.

So I have installed the 32 bit version and will go with that for a while...
I'm liking Win 8, so I don't want to go back to XP or Vista...
Only real downside is only utilizing 2 out of my 4G of ram.

Later,
Bob T.
