Solved new motherboard

Hi
my motherboard has expired.

I am in the process of changing it and adding extra memory. I will probably keep the same CPU.

Should I prepare the OS for the new setup using "sysprep" before removing the old motherboard(I can still boot from it), or should I just change the components and take it from there. Presumably reactivating the OS by telephone.

Answers much appreciated.

Frank

Your new MOBO will have a uEFI BIOS.

Make sure you backup your DATA.

Clean the HD Drive, using Step one in this tutorial:

The board I am buying is brand new.

It is a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD£ rev 1.0 which is replacing a Gigabyte GA-MA790GPT-UD3H.

Hi
I have spoken to Microsoft Technical Support and their reply is, Providing the same hard drive is used the system should boot straight away with no problems.

We'll see!!!!

Well, I did what Microsoft support said, and guess what, everything worked but the system needed to be reactivated.

That's where it all went wrong, I couldn't activate on line and it wouldn't allow telephone activation, so another call to Microsoft. After a short while they gave up and transferred me to technical support, I believe in the USA. They took control of my PC and tried everything but could not get it to activate. They even tried to replace the original license key. They then decided it was because the Media Pack had been installed and it should be activated with the key supplied with the pack. This didn't work either. They kept trying for over an hour to resolve the problem and then gave up suggesting that I should wipe the disc and reload the complete system from scratch. This I did but had to mount Windows 7 first as Windows 8 is an upgrade. I then tried to activate by telephone, before installing the network adapter. This went fine until I went to load the second block of 7 characters into the ID box. It would only accept 6 characters and then defaulted. So now to install the network adapter and try online. Surprise surprise it all went smoothly and after a few hours loading programmes I am now up and running, without the Media Pack.

I cannot fault the service of Microsoft but cannot understand why they could not solve the problem.

Hi theog

I think I owe you an apology for my mistrust in your replies.

I have been reading up on "clean installs from an upgrade disc" and I find that you are quite right when you say you do not have to install the donor OS first. You do however need to REFRESH the system after the install to be able to ACTIVATE.

Thanks again for your help.

It should be pointed out however that the terms of the EULA must be adhered to and the OS used to purchase the upgrade against must not be activated while the upgrade is activated.
