Hello,

I realise we don't have much information yet, but I wonder what sort of /installation upgrade options might be available with 8 when it happens?

For example:

Windows 8 Starter
Windows 8 Professional
etc. etc.

Whats do you think?

I'm thinking that the fast usb stick option would price out higher with additional profit margin built in I say it's more likely to cost $40.00 more. How about a pre-installed Revo drive option? True plug in update and play, likewise a Sata II/III SSD option for mobile and desktop options.

You can buy a 4 gig flash drive (all thats needed) for around $10. I would be willing to pay that much more for a USB install "disk" over an actual DVD. It installs about twice as fast easy (I used one to install onto my SSD).

I suppose there is a way to lock it in...

It would be possible to put a SOC embedded in the flash drive and use AES encryption. The SOC would only allow access to perform a read only operation once the the flash drive is booted.
So theoretically they could add custom firmware and a bootloader to the SOC and then allow access the to actual storage medium. The SOC firmware would disallow copy or read operations if not a "sandboxed" boot from the flash drive.

---Just an idea

Hi,

Excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean by unsecured? Surely a flashdrive is no less unsecured than a DVD? Or am I misunderstanding what you mean by unsecured?

Golden

Well with DVDs they can use a built in cypher to keep a copy protection lock on it, but with a flash drive that is not an option unless they implement copy protection using actual hardware, that being a System on a Chip which would act like a Hypervisor.

Thanks Ionbasa. So its not possible to include a copy protection lock on a flashdrive? Whats so different about how information is written to a DVD as opposed to a flashdrive?

Compact Disc and DVD copy protection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Basically for disk media, encryption can be ensured if a company wanted to implement it.

On a flash drive that is different because its Re-writable media and you could make and image of the flash drive and then redistribute it. The same way you would image a hdd for backup, you could image an flash drive. Then protection would have to be at the hardware level for flash drives using a "System on a Chip" and implementing it to act as an Hypervisor. In essence making the flash drive its own Virtual Machine with implemented copy protection.
