OEM Win 8 to Win 8 Pro upgrade question

I apologize if this has been answered already elsewhere, the search didn't bear fruit. I'm trying to hunt down an answer for a family member and haven't had much luck as of yet. I even tried to call into Microsoft but their phone reps couldn't seem to understand the details of the question.

A computer was purchased with OEM Windows 8. The user wanted to upgrade to Win 8 Pro but is old fashioned and prefers to have disks for this type of thing so they purchased item 3UR-00001 from an online retailer. Reading into the details I see that this will for sure complete the upgrade from Win XP, Vista, 7, 8 Consumer Preview, and 8 Release Preview. However nowhere can I confirm one way or another if this item will bump us from OEM Win 8 to Win 8 Pro successfully.

I'm trying to locate a definitive answer before we open the package so it can be returned in case this will not do the job. Any help would really be appreciated.

I had actually planned on using the Add Features dialog just as that FAQ suggested using the product key that should be in the box they had purchased when I performed the upgrade for him. My worry, however, is for whether or not this upgrade is actually licensed for going from OEM Win 8 to Win 8 Pro.

I realize that it would have been simpler for him to purchase just the licence for the Win 8 Pro pack but he really is a stickler for having physical media.

What he had purchased appears to be the same as Microsoft Store Online. It specifically lists
To install Windows 8 Pro upgrade, customers must be running Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, or Windows 7. If you would like to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro, click here.
I have not been able to locate an answer as to whether customers with Win 8 are directed to that Pro Pack just for simplicity sake, or because this full upgrade pack will not actually do the job.

Yes, it is good for upgrading Windows 8 HP to Windows 8 Pro.

The Pro Pack is a high version then Pro, like the Windows 7 Ultimate.

Not sure if this helps but I was on the phone with a microsoft rep last night. I have pre-installed win 8 and the only option to upgrade is through pro pack. The win 8 pro ($39.99, digital DL) is for people that has win 7 or lower. I havent bought the Pro Pack yet, waiting until after work but it should upgrade oem/pre-installed 8 to pro.

Thanks synical. I actually called Microsoft 4 times and the answers were evenly split between, 2 yes it will perform the upgrade and 2 no it will not.

Having trouble trusting any of the answers a this point.

np Thump. If anything I'll post back later tonight or tomorrow and let you know what happens.

Oh yeah I don't know if you know but if it came pre-installed. The product key is in the bios. It should be able to pick it up and install win 8 with no problem.

Ok, so basically I lose the licence rights. And it is also saying that I will lose the programs that came with this computer?
