My friend's Win8 upgrade ( no, really! It was MY FRIEND'S machine, I swear!) halted on an error with an Intel driver issue. The solution was simple, he just needed to update his drivers from the mobo website BEFORE trying to upgrade to Win8. Untold hours of misery trying to track down the error rather than the few minutes of updating his drivers.

Things like this are why a clean install is generally recommended.

I agree 100%. I tried the upgrade route and spent a 1/2 day troubleshooting a sluggish computer. Clean install "fixed" most everything.

My sentiments exactly. I would never try to do anything but a clean install. My friend did not want to bother to try to figure out how to do a clean install on a UEFI BIOS machine with the upgrade disk he burnt from Microsoft tho. He didn't think it was possible and he didn't ask or come here to look.

The worst was him trying to troubleshoot the specific cause that is listed in the error message. He spent hours trying to uninstall a driver that he could not even find for the Intel LAN driver. I just had him turn off the unused LAN port in the BIOS so the driver never was loaded. Kludge but it worked. The RIGHT solution was to upgrade to the current driver for the mobo.
