Windows 8 format view issues

I just helped my dad (he is 86) set up a new computer (desktop Dell) with windows 8. I have not run it before, have Windows 7 on both mine at home. At the Google home page, you cannot see the URL window, or anything at the top of the page. How to I go to a traditional view? I ordered a Windows 8 for dummies book but will not have it for two days yet.

Can you see the URL window on other pages. Are you using the Metro view or the standard desktop view?
