Solved Dual Boot Windows 7 & 8 (With Windows 7 Installed later)

Hi All.

Recently I installed Windows 8 Pro on my system (in a SSD), after a few weeks I noticed that the OS isn't compatible with certain programs I use, so I wanted to install Windows 7 Home Premium alongside it.

Since I don't really want to clean install 8 after installing 7, I installed 7 onto a separate HDD within my case.

I've now got to the stage of the black background/white text boot menu, which shows Windows 8 and Windows 7, but whenever I select Windows 7 it just reboots the PC back to the Boot Splash screen (Bios/Post screen)

I've repaired the install with Windows 7 discs and with Windows 8 discs and neither seemed to help. I've used EasyBCD installed on Windows 8 to create the boot menu and that doesn't help anything either.

When in Windows 8 the Drive letters are such
C:/ is Windows 8
W:/ is Windows 7

Short of clean installing I really don't know quite what to do.

Any suggestions?

Before it is asked, that drives have been in that case since I built it and not moved from a seperate machine.

Thank you for your help.:D

Its currently not booting either OS for some reason, just trying to get it to boot 8 now.
Will edit post with further developments.

Will a shot of the disk layout from Windows 7 install screen help?
Both OS are getting me wound up tonight and I'd rather not get annoyed at something so trivial.

This will fix the boot settings for Windows 8 only yes? Or will it apply to both?

Attempted a refresh and was met with a "Windows cannot be refreshed because the drive windows is located on is locked, please unlock the drive to continue"

Rather than fiddle about with even more settings and possibly get nowhere, I bit the bullet and wiped my installations.
I'm currently installing Windows 7 onto my HDD, I'll set it up and then install windows 8 onto the SSD and set it up.

Hopefully the system will like this and actually choose to work.

Its all finished, thanks for the links you provided me. While I appreciate the gesture I was in no need of them since I've been building PC's for near on 8 years now.

I installed 7 on its own disk and partition and then installed 8 on the SSD (which has only win 8 on it and nothing else)

Ran the system and it works perfectly, a little annoyed I cant use SSD for faster booting of Windows 7 but I wanted to keep it seperate since I'm doing a lot of read/writes with 7 and that doesn't help SSD lifespan.

Aside from one small bug with the mouse (no drivers) it worked fine, managed to get the drivers eventually and now its smooth as can be.

Thanks again.

Hi SynAppx, glad you figured it out.

I purchased a laptop with Win8 (not Pro) pre-installed and I want to dual-boot Win7. Do you think your problem arose because you had Win8 and was trying to install Win7, since you had to end up wiping both installations and then installed Win7 first, and then Win8 after.

I am worried that I might run into this problem if I am trying to install Win7 as a dual-boot onto my Win8 system.

Thanks, theog for your response. I will try to find a way to enable Secure Boot...

Leave Secure Boot DISABLED.

If you re-enabled Secure Boot, you can not install Windows 7.

Step 3) Reset BIOS to default, and reboot to BIOS make sure Secure Boot is disabled.

Step 5) press enter on the UEFI DVD drive

If you do not Boot from the UEFI DVD drive, you can not install Windows 7.

  1. Let me ask one question please, I have Windows 8 installed in my laptop. But I want to create a partition and dual-boot with Windows 7.Will this be oki? Some in this forum said that problems occur after installing Wins 7 alongside Windows 8 pre-installed.
  2. How can I use UEFI? It only supports 64-bit right?
  3. I clearly know that first to install Windows 7 and Windows 8 after is oki.

welcome to EightForums.

You can install Windows 7 x64 in dual boot first or second.

Follow Step one to five in this tutorial:
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/13326-downgrade-windows-8-windows-7-a.html
Warning ,you must have the uEFI/BIOS firmware settings in Step Three set.
Also take note of the note about Dual booting.

Than follow this tutorial: (installing in uEFI mode.)
