    No disk partitions showing

    Hi all,

Having a lot of problems with a new Dell XPS 15 (L521X) which I finally got to boot after upgrading the RAM and it hanging on boot up.

Once I got that fixed I decided I wanted to create an extra partition for dropbox to sit on. I used EASEUS Partition Master to split the 750GB main HDD into a 350GB & 400GB partition. Something went wrong when performing the partition and the machine will no longer boot. Here's as much info as I can give:

When the machine powers up I get presented with a screen saying:
Recovery. Your PC needs to be repaired. A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed. Error code: 0xc0000225.
    Press Enter to try again
    Press F8 for Startup Settings
Press Esc for UEFI Firmware Settings
I've tried to perform an automatic repair which doesn't work and thought that I'd just try and reinstall windows.

The problem is that when I go through the install options I cannot see any partitions or drives. If I go into DISKPART and list disks it only shows the USB drive I am booting from.

I just want to try and reformat the HDD and start a fresh install but I'm not exactly sure what the process is and the specific steps involved.

Any help trying to fix this would be much appreciated.

Does Partition Master have a recovery disk you can create (most partition software does) to use to correct the partitioning problem?

If so, you'll have to create it with another pc, then use the recovery disk on yours to (hopefully) correct the problem.

Thanks for the response. I have purchased the pro version of Partition Master which now gives me access to the recovery CD. However - I get no option to boot from CD/DVD on my laptop and I can't for the life of me get a bootable USB setup with the recovery image

    Welcome to EightForums.

Check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.

    You could do a Refresh:

Thanks theog. I'm not sure what hard drive the laptop has in so I'm not sure what to download. I have run the Dell diagnostics and the hard drives check out ok. Both the refresh and reset options do not work on the windows 8 boot cd.

Furthermore, when I try an install it lists the USB bootable drive as C: but I can see a drive lettered x:\ which has a windows directory on it??

X: is the Ram drive the Repair tools are working from.

Have tried the Dell Recovery disks?

    information   Information

We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.
& made the Startup Repair CD.
Recovery Drive - Create with USB Flash Drive in Windows 8
System Repair Disc - Create in Windows 8

Did you make the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disks?

You can order OEM Recovery disks from your OEM manufacturer's website.

So, finally solved it - the SATA controller had switched somehow from AHCI to some Intel Rapid thing - Dell said there's know issues with this BIOS setting so changed it and everything worked well.
