Happened to me too, right after the first forced reboot during installation. Thank goodness I made an image of my Windows 7 install before trying to install Windows 8. I never did try an upgrade either, this happened doing a fresh install. You would think if Windows 7 installs perfectly fine on a system, Windows 8 would too.... I guess not.
