    Multiple Installations and Activation

I asked this question on the Windows Update and Activation forum and have received no advice.

"I have Win 8 Pro Upgrade which I installed over a Win 7 installation in VirtualBox. Now I would like to delete this installation and install my Windows 8 Pro on another VirtualBox VM. Will it install and activate on the new VM?

I also have ordered a System Builder version of Win 8. Will I be able to install it on more than one PC? Say I install it on PC1 then decide to install Win7 on PC1. Will I be able to install and activate my Windows 8 on PC2?

    Thanks for any advice, Jim"

    Thanks, Jim

    Hello Jim,

Yes, you will be able to do a clean install with your upgrade copy of Windows 8 on another VM since you will be deleting it on the other one.

Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade

For your system builder copy, you can install and activate it on another computer so long as it's not activated on any other computer.

Can I transfer the software to another computer or user?

You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you. You may also transfer the software (together with the license) to a computer owned by someone else if a) you are the first licensed user of the software and b) the new user agrees to the terms of this agreement. To make that transfer, you must transfer the original media, the certificate of authenticity, the product key and the proof of purchase directly to that other person, without retaining any copies of the software. You may use the backup copy we allow you to make or the media that the software came on to transfer the software. Anytime you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer. You may not transfer the software to share licenses between computers. You may transfer Get Genuine Windows software, Pro Pack or Media Center Pack software only together with the licensed computer.
    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Thanks for your reply! On the Upgrade version, how would the Win 8 installer know that I had deleted the other VM? Would I need to go through a de-activation procedure of some kind?

On the System Builder version, The package that the DVD came in mentions no more than five installations is permitted. And I thought System Builder was specifically intended for "geeks" who would want to install Win 8 on more that one PC that they had built. (Maybe not more than one installation active at one time.) Would this require some sort of de-activation before installation and activation on a second PC?

    Still a little confused, Jim

It's on the honor program that you abide by the EULA.

That's true with the System Builder copy, but you will still need a sparate key per installation if installing on all 5 at the same time. One key is good for one activation. To be able to use the key on another computer, it must be removed (ex: format) from any other first.

OK, since I am using VMs it is easy to experiment. I have an installation of Win 8 Pro Upgrade that I installed over a Win 7 installation in a VM. I installed Win8 RP on a new VM. Then I installed Win 8 Pro Upgrade over the RP installation. No problems until I tried to activate the new Win 8 Pro Upgrade. Then I got an error message that said: "This product key is already being used on another PC. Try a different key or buy a new one."

So how would I transfer the Win 8 Pro Upgrade to another PC? Would it take a phone call to MS?

    Regards, Jim

In that case, yes, you would need to do a phone activation. It's the same steps as in Windows 7 below.
