Can't find the option to burn an ISO disk

I recieved my upgrade via my university's website. They were offering the upgrade for $29.99 so I thought, I can't miss this oportunity to upgrade my old XP system.

The problem is this: I have a 32-bit version of XP on my system, so when I do an upgrade within the XP OS it automatically upgrades me to the 32-bit Win8.
The actual installation went fine, without a hitch actually.

I have a 64-bit version of Vista that I may go ahead and do a clean install of first, just so I can upgrade to the 64-bit of Win8. But when I was going through the upgrade program, I never saw the option to create the ISO DVD or Flash drive. The only options were, "Install now, or install from desktop later". I chose "install from Desktop later" and found that all it did was suspend the installation until I clicked the desktop icon, which then just loaded the upgrade without giving me the option to create the DVD or Flash disk. Is there somewhere I can download the ISO so that I can create a disk?

What worries me the most is that my download is only available for 31 days from time of purchase, and if I ever have to re-image the computer, I'm going to be out of luck. Help would be appreciated.

So far it's been a much better experience then upgrading to 7. :)

Hang on . I am just making something that will do it for you. Might take me half an hour to test etc.

No need to download the whole thing again - ( unless it is damaged - and there is no evidence of that ).

Thanks for the link SIW2! I will get on that as soon as I get home from classes today.

You will need two keys to use both 32 & 64.
Does this mean that since I've activated my product key as a 32-bit I wont be able to use it for a 64-bit install? Is there a way I can change it maybe? If I reformat and upgrade to a 64-bit version I'd hate to have thrown away that key on a 32-bit.

I don't think so, try the same key for the 64bit, if that key doesn't work, demand for a refund and pay for the new key for 64bit upgrade.

I just joined the forum for the same reason. Was running my desk top on trusty old 32bit XP but wanted to go 64bit and thought windows 8 upgrade would do it. So sad when I ended up with 32bit Windows 8. My system should run fine on either but looks like Microsoft like to have control over my decision. May have wasted my money and my XP has gone for good according to Microsoft who say I lose the right to my old Operating System in the licence upgrade. Gits

Interesting.

Have a look at the iso - it is directly on your drive.

If it looks the right sort of size - try picking it up with Poweriso free or similar.

It works fine here - I only have the 64 bit ESD to test with.

Looks like you are running that after you have done the upgrade -i.e. from within win8.

The ESD folder is still there - or it would have told you it wasn't.

If oscdimg had failed before the end e.g. due to missing /damage to esd contents - then the iso wouldn't be there.

Can't tell what the issue is from here.

Thanks for your time on this but I ended up downloading windows 8 again and saving it as an iso image. Problem is I only got a 2gig image and I'm guessing I still won't have the option to go 64bit with an install from this disc.

I'm wondering now if I could borrow my sons retail upgrade disc and try a clean install with that using my online purchased product key? His has installed as 64bit and maybe the key will still be valid?

2 gb , it was a corrupted download for sure, from memory it's over 4 gb

your son DVD will do the job, as long as you use your own key, the key is not bind to the DVD

Back to the problem in the topic, Can't find the option to burn an ISO. Has anyone figured out the reason why Upgrade Assistant doesn't provide the option to create a installation media (USB or DVD) to everyone?!? I had this problem, too. The assistant only has the options "Install now" or "Install later from Desktop" (in the middle should be "Create..."). I tried to re-download Win8-Setup program from the e-mail link from MS, same result.

This problem was solved using SIW2's ESD to ISO-app (THANK YOU _SO_ MUCH! :) ), I was able to burn the iso and apparently (tested with a VirtualBox Virtual Machine without network) it's totally able to install Windows 8 Pro. Soon trying with the computer, after taking necessary backups.

So I'm just curious, _why the inconsistency in these options_!?

I bought and downloaded the upgrade with my old Acer 1692WLMi laptop, that barely meets the requirements (1Gb RAM and so on), and has an legitimate Win XP Home (32bit) on it.

Just to sum up a few things I read within this thread:

- if you got the option "install later", just choose it. The upgrade wizard is build in a manner, that it can resume on the step, where it was interrupted.
- You will find a shortcut "Download Windows 8" or similar on your desktop, that enables you to re-invoke setup wizard.
- After invoking the wizard, and if download is successful and completed, you should see an option box to create an iso file that may be burned later to a DVD (manual action required).

If that option to store the download into an iso file doesn't occurs, the main system is damaged. Either the download is corrupt, or the features to create the iso file from the ESD file collection is blocked. I've seen such cases during analyzing several log files.

Concerning the 32/64 bit issue: The upgrade wizard always "tries to upgrade" the hosting system. A 32 bit host can only upgraded to a 32 bit Win 8 - a 64 bit host can only an upgrade to 64 bit (that's the sense behind an upgrade).

The key is valid for 32 or 64 bit Windows 8. So, if you managed it, to get your hands on a 64 bit install medium, you can use the key assigned to a 32 bit system.

But it can lead to activation issues, if the system already has been installed on other hardware (it smells like piracy, if the same key is activated on two systems between days). MS currently has set the "piracy treshold" for internet activation low. If you run into activation issues, try a phone activation (Windows+R - enter slui 3).

HTH
