there is no key because the installed windows 8 will be a volume license.

Which means if you try to copy it to another drive it will more than likely fail to activate.

Volume licensing versions are locked to the machine and components they are installed on. (Stops people using OEM volume on self built machines)

The answer was what I feared- currently there are no Asus-provided recovery tools to create a disk image for the G75VW with Windows 8. This was very surprising to me but right now this is the official word from Asus.

Will you need to use the Windows system image.

System Image - Create in Windows 8

Recovery Drive - Create with USB Flash Drive in Windows 8

System Repair Disc - Create in Windows 8

A recovery USB flash drive cannot be used to install Windows 8 unless this is an OEM PC that came with Windows 8 preinstalled, and you checked the Copy contents from the recovery partition to the recovery drive box at step 5 below.

But if I have a OEM PC and I replace the harddrive, can I then also reinstall windows 8 with it?

sorry, was meant for an other topic..

I went though all that, New ASUS laptop has no recovery disk utlity!, In the end I ended up doing a clean install. My install media read the embedded code in my BIOS and activated online no problem. I made images but they wouldn't restore to the smaller SSD drive.

OA3.0 doesn't use volume licensing, each PC has its own unique embedded product code. Activation is done online too, not against a SLIC table as in OA2 or lower. Cloning to a new drive should work. You don't need custom OEM media either. Any official Microsoft Windows 8 media will read the embedded code, install the matching version, and activate online.

Any official Microsoft Windows 8 media
Doesn't seem to be easy for the average punter to get hold of.

What about the average user who, by an error of omission or commission, ends up with an 8 machine ?

Best thing for them to do is to upgrade to win7. If they can't do that , free Aomei or macrium will make images. How many average users know about that stuff? Not many, I expect.

When I did the clean install on my laptop I had to resort to a bit-torrent download. I didn't have my MVP status and TechNet/MSDN access at that time. I've since got an official ISO with my TechNet subscription. I just compared the MD5 hash code of the bit-torrent ISO to that shown on TechNet. It matched so odds were good that it hadn't been messed with. I still kept my eye out for anything weird happening. It's a shame really that Microsoft won't let the average Joe get a nice clean ISO to use with their already purchased and legal product code. You're never really 100% sure when you get it from most other sources.

TRUE, but it is not Microsoft, it is the job of OEM manufacturer's to support the software installed on there PC's, some OEM's do support Clean install media.

For the software generally, contact the manufacturer or installer for support options. Refer to the support number provided with the software. For updates and supplements obtained directly from Microsoft, Microsoft may provide limited support services as described at support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx. If you are using software that is not properly licensed, you will not be entitled to receive support services.
If you are seeking a refund, contact the manufacturer or installer to determine its return policy for a refund or credit. You must comply with that policy, which might require you to return the software with the entire computer on which the software is installed for a refund.

Few and far between I think though. Most want you to pay for recovery media that puts all the junk back on. Still its better than nothing. I got lucky by getting my MVP status and access to TechNet. I've downloaded a large number of ISO's just to have just in case. I don't do PC repair for a living but I'm the go to guy for family and friends with PC issues. Having clean install media is a god send for me.
