I would rather have a Duel Booth set up

Hello, This is my first post.

I have Win7 installed, in one partition. I did a new install of Win8 on another HDD, in one partition, using this machine. I removed the Win7 HDD and hooked up the new HDD before I installed Win8. I was going to use one of my HDD internal enclosures so I could use Win7 or Win8. I decided, I would rather have a Duel Booth set up. That way I can leave the Win8 HDD connected to the MB, at all times. I want to use the new Win8 Duel Boot screen.

Unless I'm reading it wrong. Your instructions does not show how to this when you have Win8 already on a HDD. I don't want to start over again because I already got Win8 set up the way I want it.

One more thing, I have Win7 and Win8 installed on each HDD drive without the 150mb(Win7) and 350mb(Win8) "System Reserved Partitions."

Thanks for any help.

I think all you need to do is install EasyBCD and add Windows 7 as a bootable selection.

EasyBCD is OK but use's the Windows 7 Boot Loader, not Windows 8 boot loader.

Thanks for the help.

I couldn't get, Refresh Windows 8 to work. It says the drive is locked. I think I got that fixed. But I have a bigger problem.

Please help.

Overnight, the computer shut off on it's own and restarted. I woke up with a message saying the computer had to shut down with these details.

I will post the details here. If I need to start another thread for help, let me know.

C:\windows\minidump\110512-26296-dmp
C:\users\tom\appdata\local\temp\wer-2236046-0-sysdata.xml
C:\windows\MEMORY.DMP

I found all but this one, C:\users\xxx\appdata\local\temp\wer-2236046-0-sysdata.xml.

The two I did find, I can't read.

My Mother Board is a Gigabyte, H67M-D2-B3. It's about a year old and their Web Site says the board is Windows 8 ready.

I got the latest drivers, from their site. They have so many. I don't know which ones are needed. I got a disk with the board but it's for Window 7. The disk won't run setup in Windows 8.

When I get this fixed I'll come back and try to do a duel boot setup and post my findings.

Thanks

Update on the restart problem I mentioned in my last post..

I downloaded Windows Debugger. I don't know if I'm reading it right.I think an Intel graphics driver is at fault. I looked in Device Manager. The latest driver is there. The driver package I got from the Gigabyte Website that I loaded, updated.

Does anyone know how to read, Windows Debugger. If I need to start a new Thread let me know or I can paste the, Bugcheck Analysis here.

Thanks

Restart problem fixed. It was the graphics driver. I rolled the driver back, so far so good. Windows Debugger tool is your friend. If you have any problems with, BSOD this is the APP to use. Windows Debugger is included in the Windows SDK.

You will need to get the tool that's right for your OS. For Windows 8, you need the tool for Windows 8. For Windows 7, you need the tool for Windows 7.

Download and Install Debugging Tools for Windows

Now I will get back to getting the duel boot to work.

Hello, as I posted, I had a few problems trying to do a Refresh of Windows 8. I got them fixed.

I still want to do a duel setup. I have a few questions before I dive in..

If I use the Refresh your PC, option in Window 8, suggested in a earlier post. Will the final result let me Duel Boot?

I have Windows 7 on one Hdd and Window 8 Pro on another Hdd. I can boot into 7 or 8 if I change the disk boot order in the Bois.

There is no selection screen for me to choose an OS.

I looked in Computer Management. If I'm booted into Windows 8 the Windows 7 HDD just shows as a extra HDD connected to the system, it doesn't show Windows 7 is on the drive.. If I boot to Windows 7, Computer Management shows the Windows 8 HDD as just another HDD, it doesn't show Windows 8 on the drive.

I don't have the System Reserve, 100mb Win7, 350mb Win8, partition on any of the drives. Each OS is taking up the whole drive. Is this the reason I can't see the OS on the second drive, in Computer Management?

So, if I do a Refresh your PC to Windows 8 with the Windows 7 HDD connected, will I get Windows 8 back as I have it now or will I get the new duel boot, selection screen?

Thanks

1) Make sure your Windows 8 HD Drive is set to first boot.

2) Install EasyBCD,http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/]EasyBCD

3) Add your second OS.

4) Test both OS's are booting OK.

NOTE: EasyBCD will use the Windows 7 Boot Loader.

I'm going to try the Refresh your PC. I don't mind reloading some Apps. It's better than doing the whole OS. I was worried I would wipe Wipe out the Win7 HDD and my new Win8 install.

I will get back and post the out come.

'theo,

Hello mate. That is just a bcd entry telling the Windows 8 bootmgr which type of boot menu to use.

You can have either the text menu - vastly superior for dual/multibooting, or you can have the win8 GUI thing.

Of course, you only use Easybcd for multibooting.

You only want that GUI thing if you are stuck with the limitations of touch screen - that is what the big squares are there for.

1) Make sure your Windows 8 HD Drive is set to first boot.

2) Install EasyBCD,http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/]EasyBCD
