In my case, I needed to re-install Win 7 Pro on my machine prior to upgrading it to Win 8. I installed it but got an activation error when I attempted to activate it. I didn't feel like going thru the telephone activation process at the time so just proceeded with the upgrade to Win 8 fully expecting that the installer would see that I was attempting to upgrade an un-activated copy and refuse to install. To my surprise, the Win 8 install completed without a hitch and activated fine.

You're funny! I also think that you misunderstand my messages. I clearly specified that I need a detailed technical description of this damn process. You, captain "Obvious", only provided a few steps described with baby words. If you don't want to help a fellow in need (LOL) , at least stay out of it. Don't take it out on me if 90% of computers who run Windows, have pirated versions of the operating system.
