X48 chipset not compatible with windows 8

This question is a little off topic but, the support contact info and links were all from Microsoft websites and addresses and the tech identified themselves on the phone and online as Microsoft.

I contacted the support links on the Windows 8 upgrade page- all microsoft.com links, it seems misleading at the very least if the assistance i thought I was getting from MS was in fact NOT MS at all. Certainly the security of my computer might be in question if some random scam artist got in. in any event but my concern heightened if it was not MS helping me.

I will update the bios today and see if the upgrade works.

No, I mean they were probably outsourced. If you ever email someone at Microsoft, for example, you can tell if they really work for Microsoft, or are just contractors - if the alias starts with a letter followed by a dash (v-<something>@Microsoft.com), for instance, that's a contractor. Unfortunately, a lot of the consumer-level support nowadays is actually farmed out to contractors, but that might be because paying for premier support is a heck of a lot more expensive. In any case, let us know how the BIOS update goes. I'll pass along that the vendor isn't using the right tools for the job .

So I updated the bios to F8D and the Win 8 upgrade still fails out at 32%. Exactly as it has been doing.

I have done everything I know, which is not much, and let the MS techs have at it got a couple of days without a successful install. The bios was their last suggestion. I may call them back and see if they have a fix.

Thinking about building a new machine and or at least trying to get a refund on the upgrade.

Can you get the logs from the Windows 8 setup attempt? The logs are located on the hard disk in \Windows\Panther. Note that one of the things it does at around the 32-34% mark can fail if it thinks there's not enough HDD space available - not saying that's happening, but it's worth making sure the drive passes a chkdsk before attempting installation.

Geez....I'm just wondering how widespread the incompatibilities issues are.

I cannot install Windows 8 on any of my HP XW6200 or XW6400 workstations. These are grade A business class machines, and not that old. They are all running on Win 7 64 bit OS with Adobe CS5 and CS6 Premiere Pro editing software.

There is NO WAY in h*** I am going to replace these machines for YEARS to come.

What on earth is Microsoft thinking?

I have an xw6600, which is quite similar, which works without any issues sans driver updates. I would still want logs, as something is quite wrong.
