Well, my Windows8 will hang unless I change my default OS to Win8 in msconfig, reboot, and then change my BIOS to IDE from AHCI. I don't know nothing about nothing except this works for me for now. hopefully, someone can come up with a permanent solution.

This is just a prime example of Microsoft rushing to release. Maybe a few years of beta and pre release testing was not long enough :/

Set the BIOS to AHCI mode.

Try this, starting with 1) & down until Windows 8 boots OK.

    1)Automatic Repair - Run in Windows 8

    2)Refresh Windows 8

    3)Reset Windows 8

@needhelp likewise all my drivers the most recent ones are from around 2006-2007. Maybe secure boot is the reason but Microsoft says its not crucial to run windows 8 so I don't know what to think!!

@madhorseman thank you for your post, I have run the app and the results i got are

    64maximum bit length
    Yes hardware d.e.p
    No hardware virtualisation

What does this mean in relation to windows 8?
You haven't got a problem with the "NX" situation! Sorry not to be of more help.

Well I'm not sure that Secure Boot plays any part in this anymore, because a friend of mine also had a notification in the upgrade assistant that his machine was incompatible with Secure Boot, yet his machine installed the Windows 8 Pro upgrade just fine.

Last night I installed the latest Nvidia driver for my graphics card Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT to one that is optimized for Windows 8, and that didn't help either.

I also ran the tool MadHorsemen, with the same results as Jay:

    64maximum bit length
    Yes hardware d.e.p
    No hardware virtualisation

So we can definitely rule out NX (or more appropriately: a lack thereof) as the culprit.

Oboy, last time I did the refresh I had to format and reinstall. But for the sake of science I will forge ahead.
    Restarting @ 9:41
    Change to AHCI
    Splash Screen
    rebooting on its own
    splash screen
    rebooting
    automatic repair
    diagnosing your pc
checking disk for errors. This might take over an hour
    Attempting repairs (time: 9:49)
Still attempting repairs at 10:00, been here before. Will let this run for awhile, but if memory serves me, it will tell me it could not repair
I'll get back to to this thread later

@madhorseman Atleast I know my issue is not NX related. Thanks for your help!

@needhelp hm me and you are in the exact same predicament. I don't know what else to try, one thing i have not yet tried is to boot/instal from USB which I wil try today if my neighbour can lend me her one! I will report back if I have any success. Have you tried this method?

Well at least we can feel slightly better knowing we are not completely alone!

I have not tried the USB method -- I am curious to know if it works, but if it does, it seems like a huge unintended workaround, and if it does work, I wonder if it will have any repercussions on our machines later on. I don't know if it would, but it just feels like we are having to go to such great lengths to get this installed!

I think at this point we have done about as much as can be expected. I'm on the verge of calling MS Support to see what they can come up with. That will have to wait until I have a few hours to dedicate on Monday evening.

Secure Boot will not work with old PC's, only with new PC's with uEFI BIOS.
