Hi there,

I have a home built pc with 4 hards drives instead of dual booting i have the following on 3 drives win xp, win 7 win 8 I just preess F 8 for the boot menu and select the drive with the operating system I need..

I installed win 8 from a fresh installed copy of win xp without any problems other than the win xp 32 bit version and it upgrade it to win 8 pro 32 bit.

I was wondering I have another drive, with windows 7 pro and was thinking of cloning that drive with acronis and then updating that drive to windows 8, what concerns me is do microsoft keep the product key of the windows 7 and then realise that the drives operrating system as been updated, so that If I where to go online with the cloned copy of windows 7 it would not allow me to use it? I hope I make sense?

Hello Bob,

As per the EULA above, if you would like to use both say Windows 7 and Windows 8, then you would need to purchase a system builder copy of Windows 8 instead of an upgrade copy of Windows 8.

If you purchase an upgrade copy of Windows 8, then you are not allowed as per the EULA above to have Windows 7 installed when you have the upgrade copy of Windows 8 installed. This includes dual boots as well. You can still clean install an upgrade copy of Windows 8 though.

Hope this helps, :)
