Profile Relocator

Hi all,

I'm a frequent reader and first-time poster! I have a minor concern that I haven't found in the previous threads, and I was hoping someone might be able to help me.

I'm looking to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro from Windows 7 Professional on my Thinkpad X1. On my Windows 7 setup, I used a handy application called Profile Relocator (can be viewed at Software by Joseph Cox) to send all my user profile stuff on a separate partition so that I may keep my program files and personal files separate. I want to maintain this setup for Windows 8, and my reluctance in upgrading comes from the fact that there doesn't seem to be any documentation on the effects of upgrading with such a setup. My main concerns are:
  • Will Windows 8 automatically recognize the setup I have, and preserve it in the upgrade process?
  • If not, would I have to copy all my files, run Profile Relocator again upon upgrading to Windows 8, and paste all my files over to the new setup?
I definitely don't want to dive in to the upgrade without any information and would like to save myself some headaches, if possible. Any information/tips would be highly appreciated!

Best,
jk

I would play it safe and do two things.

1. Create a full image backup of your current Windows 7, including OS and Data drives.
2. Put everything back to normal.
3. Upgrade toe Windows 8.
4. Redo Profile Relocator (if it's still compatible with Windows 8).

That way if something goes wrong you can restore the image to get back to where you are now.

I just found this program, Profile Relocator, today. Plan on using it to set up a new laptop using Windows 8. Are there any know problems with this program? Does it properly transfer all security permissions with the directories that are moved to a new drive or partition?
