Hello, Currently i have windows 7, and i want to dual Boot with W8, Is this possible to happen or can you only upgrade and not keep the older version, because i want to put W8 on another harddrive on my computer, and if this is possable, how would i go about doing it?

you need another Windows 7 , Vista or XP license, as if you upgrade from your actual Windows 7 it not legal to still use it.

Hello Jemjem, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you wish to use both Windows 7 and Windows 8 in a dual boot, then you would need to purchase a "system builder" copy of Windows 8 instead of an upgrade copy of Windows 8.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Ok so what is wrong with the 40 dollar Windows 8 Pro downloadable .ISO which can easily be clean installed with no prior Windows 7 system installed? I saw no warnings about the legal requirements what so ever for the Windows 8 Pro download. Dual booting with this version will be no problem.

It never asked me if I had a previous Windows Op system version on my system at all, never said a thing about legal requirements, long as they get their money I guess, maybe they can make it up with App sales.

System builder required not so sure, if Msoft has no problems with me clean installing this new Op system for 40 bucks then why should anyone else?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with doing a clean install with an upgrade copy of Windows 8.

You just are not allowed as per the EULA below to have both the upgrade Windows 8 and the say Windows 7 (qualifying OS) you upgraded from installed at the same time. This includes dual boots. If you do, then it is consider to be an illegal installation, and thus piracy.

What about upgrading the software?

The software covered by this agreement is an upgrade to your existing operating system software, so the upgrade replaces the original software that you are upgrading. You do not retain any rights to the original software after you have upgraded and you may not continue to use it or transfer it in any way. This agreement governs your rights to use the upgrade software and replaces the agreement for the software from which you upgraded. After you complete your upgrade, additional software will be required to playback or record certain types of media, including DVDs.

Yes but the Eula also says "upgrade existing operating system" and as it was a "clean install" with no Windows 7 to upgrade from then by definition it wasn't an upgrade installation, because of this I don't see how it would make my Windows 7 activation invalid. And no I'm not dual booting, can't stand it.

And I realize we are splitting some legal hairs here LOL.

I think it's more of you possibly misunderstanding instead. :)

It will never invalidate your Windows 7 key number or it's activation.

Even though you are technically "able" to. The EULA requires you to uninstall/format your Windows 7 (OS you upgraded from) before installing the upgrade copy of Windows 8. You get the lower price for an upgrade copy of Windows 8 by agreeing to replace your previous OS (ex: Windows) with the upgrade copy of Windows 8. If you don't then it is considered to be an illegal installation.

If you want to keep both Windows 7 and Windows 8 installed, say in a dual boot or separate computers, then you would need to purchase a system builder copy of Windows 8 instead of an upgrade copy of Windows 8.

So per the Op's original question, yes it is possible and it will work and no the Msoft police won't break your door down if you dual boot, but by definition it's illegal and goes against the Eula. Ok got it now. :)

Just say NO to Piracy ;)

I'm not promoting the piracy as per the just "say no statement" , but there is a legal way to do this.

Lets say the Op has at least two Windows 7 activations, one is tossed and not used as per the Eula, the other is installed to the second partition. You are now dual booting with the 40 dollar version of Windows 8 and a still legal copy of Windows 7.

So really the Op only needs a second activated copy of Windows 7 in order to do this legally, correct?

He may have more than one key he can use but who knows.
