Right were to start:

1: difficult to access safe mode.
2: impossible to recover from the new "black screen of Death"
3: no media player its now an extra and at a cost!!!!
4: all games etc that used to be included you have to get from the New store.
5: no start menu from the desktop. Users will not get used to this, it is ludicrous on a desktop pc.The search all apps just gives you every exe on the machine in no logical order.
6: Start menu functionality can be restored only by buying third party apps.
7: no Aero, ok aero should have been updated but not to the same standard as windows 98. Progress it is a joke!
8: the only way to reinstall and maintain your applications is to use a system restore (which you cant after the black screen of death) or to reimage your disk.
Some of the above are not just gripes they are major show stoppers. I knew it was designed to work on a mere tablet so all that money I had invested in a powerful graphics card and ram were no longer going to be doing anything to run windows. Microsoft had better start releasing updates soon and they had better be free.

So in order to fix the black screen of death I have to reimage my hard disk using my windows 7 backup. Thank god I had one. So my laptop may get reconverted back to windows 8 (currently very unlikely), whereas all of the other pc's we use, and as we are 3d animaters we are talking not an inconsiderable number, will be staying firmly windows 7. I would not go near them with windows eight. So come on Linux or Apple the time is now to come out with the goods because the launch of windows 8 is going to make the horror of Vista seem like nothing.

Windows 8 is rubbish!!!!!! I want my money back!

Wow-w! A sound analysis with a lot of awareness. Obviously, you know what you're talking about. Noticed that Safe Mode wasn't an Automatic to find anymore. Didn't know that the Media PLayer was being held back for cash American dollars. Just go get the VLC Media Player and take from there. My Evaluation copy of Consumer Preview build 8250 is glitched up in a few different di-rections. It won't update Windows Defender or its own updates automatically anymore. Won't put a new WUA in - I'd rather have the Bubonic Plague. My own CPU (Pentium 4) is totally incompatible but bypassed its Error Checking and posted it onto my Dell OptiPlex GX260 from 2003. Was curious to Test it, but it appears that you're spot-on. Glad that I didn't spend on it. I wouldn't give Microsoft the time of day from an overwound Timex. Goodday.

Are these troll posts? You should always clean install to prevent these problems. And if you are using a Pentium 4, you shouldn't have access to a PC. Its 2012, not 2002.

1: difficult to access safe mode.

Windows 8 Safe Mode

2: impossible to recover from the new "black screen of Death"
not sure on this one never had any issues

3: no media player its now an extra and at a cost!!!!
there is a great media player, that yes kind of focuses on purchased content from the store, but you can load your own music and movies as well and it plays much smoother than media player ever did

4: all games etc that used to be included you have to get from the New store.

True, however you have access to hundreds of other games through the free section of the store

5: no start menu from the desktop. Users will not get used to this, it is ludicrous on a desktop pc.The search all apps just gives you every exe on the machine in no logical order.

There are start tiles and if you take the time to fully customize everything its much quicker, the search is by far better than win 7

6: Start menu functionality can be restored only by buying third party apps.

Start menus are so last year ... are you a hipster?

7: no Aero, ok aero should have been updated but not to the same standard as windows 98. Progress it is a joke!

aero is still on the original desktop by pressing the desktop tile

8: the only way to reinstall and maintain your applications is to use a system restore (which you cant after the black screen of death) or to reimage your disk.

???!?!?!??!?

OMG windows uses less resources stop everything!

No need for rude comments.

I don't know why he got the "black screen of Death"

but there is no dvd support, and no start menu , and no aero.

If he doesn't like - he is perfectly entitled to say so.

Start menus are so last year ... are you a hipster?

What's a hipster?

I happen to like a start menu.

Exactly What I was Thinking!

1. Not Difficult To Access Safe Mode!
2. Never had your alleged Black Screen of Death
3. Windows Media Player is still installed on Windows 8 and Windows Media Center Is Free If You Actually used google to find it!
4. There are so many games in the new store and hitting install for the one you want is that difficult? Especially when most people would rather it not be installed by default.
5. The Start menu has not gone any where why would you need to restore it ? It's merely been transformed to work with both touch screen and keyboard / mouse not to mention the new swipe menu that's also on the desktop of windows 8. Most people when searching for a program on windows 7 would click start then type for the app / program they wanted to run. Now you just hit windows key and type the program / app you want to run not to mention they even added three filters for you to chose from to narrow your search results down.
6. It's not Microsoft's fault you purchased a product with out aero.

I'm no expert at windows and by all means I am probably a little bit more experienced then the average user and was still able to figure out all this I'm sorry you couldn't and wasted your money! But, I am sure more people would rather have helpful threads in the Eight Forums not to mention the help you probably could get figuring out / fixing your problems with windows 8. Tons of resources here and I'll be the first to help!

I'm just tired of all the win 8 bashing by people not willing to give it a chance... do you have to relearn everything... yes, will it take 6-10 hours before you know all the functions yes..., will you be able to do everything you did plus more yes...

P.S. P4 was in the bone yard like 5+ years ago ... no wonder you can't learn a new system

will you be able to do everything you did plus more yes...

No - it depends what you do.

Those of us who go a little deeper find we cannot ( or have additional hurdles ) do what we have been able to do with windows up to now.

It is made for people who want to jab at a square and do a little browsing/fbooking, etc.

Fine - there is a big market for that.

If MS can grab a share of that and lead people unsuspecting into their online services and forthcoming subscription charges - then they will make more profit.

It is not suitable for everyone.

im not saying there wont be additional hurdles, but with updates and tweaks and custom made apps I think it will far supersede any other version IMO. if you don't agree you have the right to, but im really curious what services you feel you are missing (don't say a friggen start button lol)

Windows 8 is rubbish!!!!!! I want my money back!

MS might well give you your money back as it must be less than seven days that you have had a valid product key!
I did read about someone who got a refund.

Alternatively you could sell your product key.

Source Forge do a free start button which works quite well.

It's not services that are missing - it's not about custom apps.

It is about lack of control over the o/s - the kind of control we used to have.

A couple of simple examples - there are considerable difficulties with permissions if you want to make changes to files - or access/customise many things in the windows directory. There has been a deliberate removal of functions from explorer - more specifically shell32 - making it near impossible to create your own mini o/s , or a decent pe ( assuming you know what that is ).

It is pretty much do it the MS way - or don't do it at all.

It used to be "It's your pc " - not with win8 it isn't.

You may not follow what I am talking about - that shows we do different things.

Hey, that's cool. I just hit a level of Status Quo that would've taken a couple of months to elevate. My P4 does about the same speed as my 1964 Ford Falcon Futura Tudor Sedan w/ 302CID HO engine in the garage. I hope I'm not off topic, gentlemen.

lol you mean like a mac??

and yes I agree there was a deliberate removal of functions because for a normal consumer they aren't required, and with more cloud based servers and homegroups for quick installation over several computers its not really necessary....
win 8 is not a server based OS... nor is it marketed that way... also look into getting the enterprise version apparently it has many of those features you are looking for (don't know 100%)

No, it doesn't - I am already quite familiar with the other editions - I am not looking for features - I like to have control - you used to get that with Windows - now you don't.

It simply is not Your PC any more.

That is the problem with win8 - not the kiddie Ui.
