    Restoring windows.old file

Short version: what's the best way to restore the windows.old file after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro? Reason? I downloaded and installed 8 Pro with no problems. All files and settings transferred perfectly. However the live tiles would not work, including windows store. After reviewing forums and support sites, and verifying resolution size, active windows account, etc, one forum thread recommended a Refresh. I thought a refresh kept all files and settings, but it moved all original programs to a windows.old file. It did keep docs and settings, but no programs files. The good news is live tiles works now.. I want to keep windows 8, so how do I properly restore all the windows.old files without corrupting anything? Thanks.

I went through precisely the same process for precisely the same reason. I would also like to know how to safely restore contents of the windows.old file. I notice that beachbum submitted his post a week ago and has apparently not received a response.

A desktop file was created listing the old programs files, which was kind of helpful, however I ended up just reinstalling the programs I wanted from an external hard drive download file I keep... just in case. Sorry I'm not much help. Apparently you are on your own... good luck.

Nope. Everything should be in there.

If you did an in place upgrade to Vista - very easy to restore from Windows.old

If you did an in place upgrade to win7 - very easy to restore from Windows.old

If you did an in place upgrade to win8 - UH OH.

Perhaps it is another thing that is not allowed.

There is a lot of that with win8.

I tried to do the restore from windows.old back to win7 a couple of times - no go.

Once you have done the upgrade - MS don't want you to go back to your previous o/s.

I strongly recommend anyone who is going to do an in place upgrade to win 8 - make an image first.

There are plenty of free programs that are quick and easy to do that with.

Macrium free, or paragon backup and recovery free for example.

What i did was created image, saved my apps, programs ect everything i could find to another drive and did a refresh. It removed most of my apps i just reinstalled them, retro apps work without any problems.

I finally got it to work.

There are quite a lot of steps involved.

Not sure the average user would find it doable.

More difficult than with previous o/s.
