I'm having exactly the same issue. Also even though I've had an email receipt with order number, product key etc, it's not showing in my Windows Store account so I can't choose to download by browser rather than through Windows setup.

    Try running this MS tool
What is the System Update Readiness Tool?
    this may help.

Before making the payment itself, it is checking the compatibility and in my system 51 applications are compatible and 10 could be updated from the vendor site.

I had the same problem, and appear to have found the culprit in my case.

I recently had some malware which disabled both windows update and the BITS services. This was evident when entering the windows update screen in the control panel only to find that windows update was unavailable as the services were not running (sound familiar?). Attempt to activate the services and they are not there!

To resolve a google search later on windows update services not being available, downloaded (from somewhere on the www) the registry keys for BITS and wuauserv, installed and restart and the updater is now happily downloading.

Thus perhaps check the BITS and Win Update services?

This issue is solved by doing the following things:

    1. I found the registry entries for the missed entries which are listed below:

    Bits
    cryptsvc
    Windows installer

    2. For creating the missing services. Download the file from the following link:

Windows Updates service registry files for Windows 7.rar

    3. Extract it. And then just double click on all the three files. Then restart your PC. and then try to upgrade your Windows. It will work.
